Evid Based Complement Alternat Med. 2019;2019:5381028 Authors: Liu F, You J, Li Q, Fang T, Chen M, Tang N, Yan X Abstract Objectives. Acupuncture has been widely used to relieve chronic pain-related insomnia (CPRI). However, the efficacy of acupuncture for CPRI is uncertain. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of acupuncture for CPRI. Methods. Seven electronic databases were searched from inception to December 2018. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were included if acupuncture was compared to sham acupuncture or conventional drug therapies for treating CPRI. Two reviewers screened each study and extracted data independently. Statistical analyses were conducted by RevMan 5.3 software. Results. A total of nine studies involving 944 patients were enrolled. The pooled analysis indicated that acupuncture treatment was significantly better than control group in improving effective rate (OR = 8.09, 95%CI = [4.75, 13.79], P

Patients with critical limb ischemia are exposed to qualitative and quantitative malnutrition as a result of anorexia caused by chronic pain, insomnia, overuse of analgesics, and limitation of mobility. Furthermore, malnutrition is a well-known factor that causes coagulation disorders and immunosuppression, and it directly adversely affects the wound healing process. The aim of this study was to assess the influence of qualitative and quantitative malnutrition on the results of revascularization procedures as frequency of large amputations in patients with critical lower limb ischemia.

Sometimes you don’t realize you’ve been drowning until the moment you’re pulled to safety, gulping fresh air again. Like others who’ve battled depression, I didn’t fully comprehend how dark I felt while muddling through it.  Even in my darkest moments, I tried to pretend everything was fine. I’d been raised to be strong and capable during a crisis — to count my blessings and refrain from complaining. Never wanting to burden my family or friends, I often hid my pain. And the more I tried to downplay my sadness, the more isolated I felt.  The terrible se...

CONCLUSIONS: We found evidence for differential relations between markers, depressive symptoms, and covariates. Associations between symptoms and markers were attenuated after covariate adjustment; BMI and sex consistently showed strong relations with inflammatory markers. The OsteoArthritis and Therapy for Sleep (OATS) study is a population-based randomized controlled trial of cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBTI) with four innovative methodological aims. These are to: (1) Enroll representative participants across Washington state, including those from medically underserved communities; (2) Enroll persons with persistent insomnia and chronic osteoarthritis (OA) pain; (3) Test a scalable CBT-I intervention; and (4) Evaluate patient-reported outcomes (insomnia, pain severity, fatigue, depression) and cost-effectiveness over one year.

Conclusion: The European Portuguese version of the FDI has very good internal consistency, good test-retest reliability, and construct validity when used in a sample of community adolescents with chronic pain. Implications for rehabilitation One of the most widely instruments used to assess functional disability is the Functional Disability Inventory (FDI), which in its original version has good psychometric properties and is recommended by the Pediatric Initiative on Methods, Measurement, and Pain Assessment in Clinical Trials; However, the FDI has not been translated yet into European Portuguese language and its psychome...

WESTFORD (CBS) – News of the statewide ban on vaping products has left medical marijuana patients devastated. Many scrambled to fill prescriptions Tuesday but went home empty handed. Conclusions: Self-reported pre-sleep somatic symptoms are a marker of comorbid anxiety and, potentially chronic pain, impacting nighttime sleep. The optimal cutoff scores of 14 and 20 proposed herein can help clinicians with case formulation, with tailoring BSM treatments and their targets. PMID: 31545084 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Abstract Chronic pain is a common condition that seriously affects the quality of human life with variable etiology and complicated symptoms; people who suffer from chronic pain may experience anxiety, depression, insomnia, and other harmful emotions. Currently, chronic pain treatments are nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and opioids; these drugs are demonstrated to be insufficient and cause severe side effects. Therefore, research into new therapeutic strategies for chronic pain is a top priority. In recent years, stem cell transplantation has been demonstrated to be a potent alternative for the treatment of ...

AO Adetoye, OI Aaron, EA Orimolade, KA P AdetifaNigerian Journal of Clinical Practice 2019 22(9):1301-1303 Neuropathic pain responds poorly to common analgesics that effectively control nociceptive pain because its pathophysiology is different and it is usually associated with co-morbidities such as sleep disturbance, depression and anxiety. Patients with this chronic pain are sometimes left with neurolysis as the last resort. A 65-year-old male multiply-injured retiree presented with disabling pain following traumatic brachial plexus injury sustained from road traffic accident 5 years earlier. Other injuries resolved wit...

I remember hearing this story many years ago and it has become a powerful teaching tool for my clients who I see in my therapy practice and in classes/presentations I offer. “I’ll never forget the day Marilyn and I were walking around New York City, just having a stroll on a nice day. She loved New York because no one bothered her there like they did in Hollywood, she could put on her plain-Jane clothes and no one would notice her. She loved that. So, as we we’re walking down Broadway, she turns to me and says, ‘Do you want to see me become her?’ I didn’t know what she meant but I just s...
