Fear and paperwork: Evaluating barriers to safer prehospital care
Since the landmark 2000 Institute of Medicine publication To Err is Human: Building a Safer Health System, an increased focus has been placed on the understanding and mitigation of errors in healthcare [1]. Although EMS systems respond to nearly 37 million events per year, there remains a paucity of research into the nature and abatement of errors in EMS systems [2,3]. Adverse events have been found in nearly all areas of EMS, including transportation, procedures, medication administration, and medical decision making [2,4-10].
