Publication date: Available online 25 July 2019Source: Journal of Clinical and Experimental HepatologyAuthor(s): Raseen Tariq, Page Axley, Ashwani SingalAbstractNon-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) is now the leading cause of chronic liver disease worldwide with a strong association with metabolic syndrome. NAFLD is truly a systemic disease and is associated with a plethora of extra-hepatic manifestations or comorbidities. These are either related to secondary effects of associated obesity or from pathophysiological effects of insulin resistance in NAFLD. Three most common causes of increased morbidity and mortality associated with NAFLD are cardiovascular disease, liver disease, and cancer. In this narrative review, we will discuss comprehensively on cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and chronic kidney disease, and will also highlight on malignancy especially colorectal cancer, pulmonary disorders including obstructive sleep apnea, endocrine disorders such as hypothyroidism and polycystic ovarian syndrome, dermatological disorders especially psoriasis, and hematological associations including iron overload and susceptibility to thrombosis. In addition to focusing on pathogenesis of these extrahepatic manifestations, we will highlight their clinical implications for physicians in routine clinical practice. Further, there remains an unmet need for safe and effective therapies and examining their benefits on these extra-hepatic manifestations among patients...

Authors: Musio F Abstract INTRODUCTION: Anemia has and will continue to be a central theme in medicine particularly as clinicians are treating a burgeoning population of complex multi-organ system processes. As a result of multiple randomized controlled trials (RCTs), meta-analyses, and societal recommendations overly restrictive paradigms and under-administration of erythropoiesis stimulating agents (ESAs) have likely been followed by clinicians among all specialties. AREAS COVERED: A review of anemia in the context of chronic kidney disease, hematologic malignancies and cancer is presented with focus on the e...

Authors: Matti B, Zargar-Shoshtari K Abstract Prostate cancer represents a significant health burden worldwide. The cancer incidence had substantially increased since the introduction of prostate specific antigen (PSA) in cancer screening. This had led to considerable debates among health professionals and epidemiologists, since PSA as a screening tool seemed to be far from perfect. In New Zealand, the controversy was quite prominent in the last three decades, with some advocating the benefits of screening, while others concerned regarding the risk of harms. With the absence of an organised screening programme and ...
