Rowing Our Way to Understanding Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Other Learning Problems

I have found that a rowboat provides an analogy that may help parents better understand the different types of learning and behavior problems. Different types of learning problems may present in similar ways, but they are different and need to be treated with different approaches. I typically start by helping the parents or guardians imagine the child is out in the middle of a lake, in a rowboat, going around in circles. We are on the shore trying to figure out what is going on.

In this study, we tested the preliminary efficacy of MOM training in children with ADHD, by comparing its efficacy with an active control condition (Emotion Education Program, EEP). Twenty-five children with ADHD aged 7–11 years participated in MOM training (n = 15) or EEP (n = 10) 3 times per week for 8 weeks. Neuropsychological and academic measures and behavioral, emotional, and mindfulness ratings were collected before and after the two programs. Conclusions: Attentional processing in boys with ADHD changes within the age-range of 6:00-10:00 years where it finally becomes similar to that in HC boys.
