Neuroimaging of traumatic brain injury in military personnel: An overview

DiscussionRecent advancements on the quantification of neurocognitive dysfunction, cellular dysfunction, intracranial pressure, cerebral blood flow, inflammation, post-traumatic neuropathophysiology, on blood serum biomarkers and on their correlation to neuroimaging findings are reviewed to hypothesize how they can be used in conjunction with one another. This may allow clinicians and scientists to comprehensively study TBI in military service members, leading to new treatment strategies for both currently-serving as well as veteran personnel, and to improve the study of TBI more broadly.

ConclusionsThis study showed that levetiracetam was the most commonly prescribed AED. It also demonstrated no statistically significant difference in the rate of early PTSs in patients with TBI, with or without prophylactic AEDs. This is in keeping with other contemporary studies, and therefore the routine administration of prophylactic AEDs may need to be re-examined.

Conclusions: These data indicate the severity of cartilage damage subsequent to MCLT+MMT surgery is related to the rat's age at the time of injury. However, despite greater levels of cartilage damage, the level of intra-articular inflammation was not necessarily affected in 3, 6, and 9 month old male rats.
