Although the transvenous implantable cardioverter defibrillator (TV-ICD) has a proven mortality benefit in multiple patient populations, there are significant risks both with implantation and years after its placement. The S-ICD may help prevent some of these complications. Currently, the S-ICD ...

CONCLUSIONS: Pre-emptive transplantation can yield comparable outcomes to those for post-dialysis kidney transplantation, and results in better quality of life for patients with end-stage kidney disease, as well as a reduced cost. PMID: 31416631 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

CONCLUSION: Thrombophilias are inherited or acquired predispositions to vascular thrombosis and have been associated with thrombosis of the arteriovenous fistula. Patients on hemodialysis with recurrent vascular access thrombosis and presence of thrombophilia should be evaluated about the need for anticoagulant therapy with a vitamin K antagonist. This study aimed to assess the safety and effectiveness of cinacalcet in managing chronic dialysis patients with severe SHPT. METHODS: This retrospective study included 26 patients [age: 52 ± 12 years; 55% females; time on dialysis: 54 (4-236) months] on hemodialysis (N = 18) or peritoneal dialysis (N = 8) with severe SHPT (intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) level> 600 pg/mL) and hyperphosphatemia and/or persistent hypercalcemia treated with cinacalcet. The patients were followed for 12 months. Their serum calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and iPTH levels were measured at baseline and o...

CONCLUSION: This study suggests that the use of sertraline may be beneficial to reduce the number of symptoms and ID interventions, although there was no statistically significant difference in the blood pressure levels. PMID: 31419272 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

CONCLUSION: In peritoneal dialysis patients, spironolactone did not attenuate the progression of CC. However, large-scale studies are needed to confirm this observation. Disorders of mineral metabolism and dyslipidemia are involved in the progression of CC. PMID: 31419271 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

MazoSummaryBackgroundRecently, changes in acute kidney injury (AKI) diagnostic criteria have been proposed (ICA-AKI criteria). However, in Brazil there is a paucity of data and analyses that evaluate AKI in patients with cirrhosis and determine the impact of the implemented AKI criteria changes. Therefore, this study sought to evaluate the incidence of AKI ...
