Timmermans and colleagues1 report on a small series of 43 patients with secondary hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) related mainly to  hypertensive emergency, pregnancy, and kidney transplantation. The incidence of complement gene variants was highly variable between HUS subtypes. The authors raise the issue that in our larger cohort of secondary HUS we did not include patients with hypertensive emergency, pregnancy, and kidney t ransplantation. These types of HUS were excluded from our analysis for several reasons.
