Partial Prostate Cancer Treatment for Aggressive Disease —Common Practice
Overtreatment of patients with early prostate cancer is a well-recognized problem.1 Appropriately, published guidelines consistently recommend active surveillance for patients with low-risk disease and watchful waiting for patients with limited life expectancy.2,3 For other patients, aggressive treatment with curative intent is warranted. During the decision-making process, the physician and patient together determine whether the patient's prostate cancer is sufficiently aggressive to warrant aggressive treatment and that potential treatment-related side effects (including erectile dysfunction and urinary morbidity) are worthwhile to achieve a cure.
