AbstractPurpose of ReviewChildren and adolescents with acute hyperglycemia and diabetes mellitus frequently have acute, potentially life-threatening presentations which require high-acuity care in an inpatient and often intensive care setting. This review discusses the evaluation and care of hyperglycemia and diabetes mellitus in hospitalized children in both critical and non-critical care settings, highlighting important differences in their care relative to adults.Recent FindingsDiabetic ketoacidosis remains highly prevalent at diagnosis among children with type 1 diabetes, and hyperglycemic hyperosmolar state is increas...

This study addresses principal aspects in the prevention of DFUs. First, the sensor-equipped insole will be evaluated for daily performance in home-based measurements of foot temperatures. Second, a telemedicine structure is tested that evaluates sensor data automatically and proposes suitable intervention measures under the supervision of a physician. Third, predictive models for DFUs will be built using the collected sensor data allowing for interpretations, which in the future may support medical care providers.Trial registrationGerman Clinical Trials Register (DRKS),DRKS00013798. Registered on 18 January 2018.

This article describes the concept and design of the trial evaluating the efficacy of this education program called “DiaLife—Living Together with Diabetes”.MethodsThis evaluation study is a cluster randomized controlled trial, in which the study centers will be randomly assigned either to the intervention group or the control group. Study centers will recruit relatives of and patients with DM type 1 and type 2. Members of the intervention group will participate in the education program DiaLife, whereas participants randomized in the control group will act as waiting-list controls. The study will assess th...

ConclusionsThe above mention data demonstrated that the hematological profile showed noticeable alterations in children with T1DM and the inflammation and oxidative stress markers were contributed to the hematological abnormalities. The results revealed that some hematological indices can be used in the early detection of T1DM children at risk of diabetic complications.

Acyl-ghrelin administration increases food intake, body weight, and blood glucose. In contrast, mice lacking ghrelin or ghrelin receptors (GHSRs) exhibit life-threatening hypoglycemia during starvation-like conditions, but do not consistently exhibit overt metabolic phenotypes when given ad libitum food access. These results, and findings of ghrelin resistance in obese states, imply nutritional state dependence of ghrelin’s metabolic actions. Here, we hypothesized that liver-enriched antimicrobial peptide-2 (LEAP2), a recently characterized endogenous GHSR antagonist, blunts ghrelin action during obese states and pos...
