Brazing of cBN to WC-Co by Ag-Cu-In-Ti alloy through microwave hybrid heating for cutting tool application

Publication date: 1 November 2019Source: Materials Letters, Volume 254Author(s): Siddharth Tamang, S. AravindanAbstractBrazing of Cubic boron nitride (cBN) to tungsten carbide (WC-Co) for cutting tool application was successfully conducted by microwave hybrid heating by way of applying a paste of Ag-Cu-In-Ti alloy. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of the joint cross-section show good metallurgical joint. Energy dispersive spectroscopy study reveals the diffusion of Ti towards cBN which leads to form Ti-N and Ti-B compounds. This improves the metallurgical compatibility with the Ag-In-Cu interlayer and thereby improving its wettability. XRD analysis confirm the formation of TiN, TiB2, TiB. The shear strength of the joint formed is high, such that the braze fails away from the joint, towards cBN.
