Zika virus infection three years after the microcephaly outbreak: A meeting report

CONCLUSIONS: Although ZIKV was not confirmed to cause the congenital malformations, this study demonstrated that the clinical and epidemiological findings associated with a STORCH exclusion strengthened the CZS diagnosis. The suspected cases in MT occurred simultaneously with the first CZS cases reported in Brazil, suggesting ZIKV circulation in the study region during the same period.

In this work, a novel energetic composite refers to CL-20 based PBX, which can self-heal its mechanical damage under a mild condition, was designed and prepared via incorporating disulfide bonds into the polymeric binder. The highly efficient self-h...

CONCLUSION: Our experience shows that patients with diagnoses of acute retinal necrosis or progressive outer retinal necrosis have a poor visual prognosis. The occurrence of cytomegalovirus retinitis signifies a very unfavorable survival prognosis in patients who underwent hematopoietic stem cell transplantation; the patients in our study died within 1 year from cytomegalovirus retinitis diagnosis. Lung transplantation is an established therapeutic option for patients with irreversible end-stage pulmonary disease limiting life expectancy and quality of life. Common indications for lung transplantation include chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, cystic fibrosis, pulmonary arterial hypertension, and alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency. Complications of lung transplantation can be broadly divided etiologically into surgical, infectious, immunologic, or neoplastic. Moreover, specific complications often occur within a certain time interval following surgery, which can be broadly classified as...

Conclusions: 3D semiautomatic quantification of PPV is feasible and reproducible using CT in patients with occupational exposure to asbestos. PPV measurement may be useful to correlate with other asbestos-related disease outcomes and prognosis.

Purpose: A common diagnostic dilemma in the assessment of small pulmonary nodules on computed tomography (CT) is in distinguishing benign intrapulmonary lymph nodes (IPLNs) from small primary pulmonary malignancies. Several CT features have been described of IPLNs, including attachment to a pleural surface. We had observed that IPLNs were often connected to a pulmonary vein and sought to evaluate the utility of this sign in discriminating IPLNs from lung adenocarcinomas. The frequency of other previously described CT signs of IPLNs was also compared with lung adenocarcinomas. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively ...

Conclusions Apart West Nile virus (78), thousands of congenital microcephaly cases, fetal brain tissue damage and neurological syndromes have been associated with ZIKV infection. Unfortunately, the epidemics of this mosquito born, and a relative stable virus is on a rise. Although congenital microcephaly is a rare disorder however, due to lack of standardized diagnostic test facilities, the incidence in the geographically widespread ZIKV epidemic regions is higher. Animals studies showed that ZIKV is a neurotropic virus. It directly targets the developing embryonic brain cells by inducing apoptosis, cell-cycle arrest, and...

CONCLUSION The phenotype of the microcephaly cases associated with the current outbreak at Rio Grande do Norte state is more severe and different from previous cases. The data here presented can be used as a guideline for those who want to differentiate microcephalies caused by the probable ZIKV-associated outbreak. The consequences of this type of microcephalies to the children, their families and the public health system are still to be determined. COMPETING INTERESTS The authors declare having no competing interests. DATA AVAILABILITY STATEMENT The data presented in this article is freely available from FigShare.
