Identification of chemotypes in bitter melon by metabolomics: a plant with potential benefit for management of diabetes in traditional Chinese medicine

ConclusionOur finding revealed a clear chemotype distribution of bioactive components across bitter melon varieties. While bioactivities of individual CTGs and OTGs still need to be investigated in more depth, our results could help in future the selection of bitter melon varieties with optimised metabolites profile for an improved management of diabetes with this popular edible Chinese folk medicine.

Authors: Siamashvili M, Davis S Abstract INTRODUCTION: Bromocriptine mesylate quick release (QR) is a dopamine D2 receptor agonist and is the only oral, primarily centrally acting drug that can be used for the treatment of adults with type 2 diabetes. AREAS COVERED: The authors describe current recommendations on the use of bromocriptine mesylate QR. Major efficacy and safety parameters of the late phase trials, including The Cycloset Safety Trial, have been identified and presented. EXPERT OPINION: Efficacy of bromocriptine mesylate QR monotherapy appears to be low but is compensated by favorable safety pr...

Authors: Frías JP Abstract INTRODUCTION: The glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists (RA) have increasingly gained prominence in the treatment of type 2 diabetes (T2D) based on their glycemic benefits and favorable body weight and cardiorenal effects. Despite this, continued development of therapeutics with superior efficacy is important to help address persistent challenges in the attainment of metabolic goals in many patients with T2D. AREAS COVERED: Tirzepatide is an unimolecular dual glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP)/GLP-1 RA in development for the treatment of T2D. This re...

We examined the clinical characteristics and post-LT outcomes of patients with sarcoidosis using the United Network for Organ Sharing database from 1985 to 2016 and compared them to patients (entire cohort as well as age, gender, and year of LT-matched counterparts) with primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) and primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC). For the matched design, a conditional logistic regression was used for categorical variables and marginal generalized estimating equation regression models for continuous variables. Survival functions were constructed using the Kaplan-Meier estimator. Results: A total of 206 pat...

Conclusions: In this large cohort of adult patients with T2D and NAFLD, commonly used fibrosis scores had reasonable specificity, but poor sensitivity for detecting AF in diabetics. The development of reliable biomarkers for NAFLD/NASH in diabetics is urgently needed.

This study aimed to evaluate the reproducibility of three BIA instruments in pregnancy and analyse the relationship between the body composition and the GDM risk. Methods: A prospective cohort (n = 117) of women with singleton pregnancies participating in the Microbiome Understanding in Maternity Study (MUMS) at St. George Hospital, Sydney, Australia. Anthropometric measurements and BIA body composition were measured at ≤13 weeks (T1), 20-24 weeks (T2), and 32-36 weeks (T3) of gestation. Body fat percentage (BFP), total body water (TBW), and impedance were estimated by three BIA instruments: Bodystat 1...

Authors: de Souza Freitas R, Fratelli CF, de Souza Silva CM, de Lima LR, Stival MM, da Silva ICR, Schwerz Funghetto S Abstract Aging is accompanied by various functional modifications determined by their environment, lifestyle, nutrition, and genetics. Based on these factors, it is essential to verify the vitamin deficiency in the elderly population. Hypovitaminosis D is commonly present in human aging, increasing the chances of developing noncommunicable chronic diseases. The VDR gene TaqI polymorphism may modify the vitamin D metabolic pathway by altering the interaction between the vitamin D receptor and the act...
