Ocular syphilis, a re-emergent pathology: Series of 12 patients in one Hospital, 2017.
DISCUSSION: Ophtalmic cases of syphilis have become more frequent over the past few years in France. The diagnosis should be suspected in cases of eye inflammation even in the absence of favourable clinical presentation or anamnesis. Search for HIV co-infection should be systematic. Our study shows that ceftriaxone remains an effective alternative to penicillin G. PMID: 31301942 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
Background: Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by Treponema pallidum, a bacterium that is difficult to culture and requires serological techniques for its diagnosis. Early diagnosis and correct interpretation of serological techniques is important to avoid potentially serious complications. The traditional diagnostic algorithm for syphilis begins with a nontreponemal test (NTT), such as rapid plasma reagin test (RPR), followed by a confirmatory specific treponemal-test (TT) only when the initial NTT turns out positive.
[Daily Trust] The Federal Ministry of Health has recommended Insti HIV 1/2 and Insti Multiplex Dual HIV1/2 and Syphilis antibody rapid tests kits as a first line kit in the national HIV testing algorithm.
Conclusions We identified two novel ecologic correlates of the spatial distribution of infectious syphilis—density of GBM and rates of syphilis testing—and found that these factors partially, though not entirely, explained the spatial distribution of clusters. Residual spatial autocorrelation suggests that greater syphilis testing coverage may be needed and low-barrier GBM-affirming testing should be expanded to regions outside the core.
Background Syphilis prevalence in sub-Saharan Africa appears to be stable or declining but is still the highest globally. Ongoing sentinel surveillance in high-risk populations is necessary to inform management and detect changes in syphilis trends. We assessed serological syphilis markers among persons with sexually transmitted infections in Zimbabwe. Methods We studied a predominantly urban, regionally diverse group of women and men presenting with genital ulcer disease (GUD), women with vaginal discharge and men with urethral discharge at clinics in Zimbabwe. Syphilis tests included rapid plasma reagin and the Trep...
Conclusions Laboratory performance of the SD Bioline HIV/Syphilis Duo test was high for the HIV component of the test. Sensitivity of the treponemal component was lower than reported from most laboratory-based evaluations in the literature. However, sensitivity of the test increased substantially among patients more likely to have active syphilis for which results of both standard treponemal and nontreponemal tests were positive.
Conclusions Testing for gonorrhea and chlamydia was low, particularly in jail, which was attributed to testing protocols. High proportions of PLWH tested positive for syphilis and HBV infection in both settings. The majority of patients with active STIs had a detectable HIV VL. Routine, opt-out screening for STIs for PLWH during and after incarceration has the potential to identify a high proportion of STIs and improve secondary HIV prevention.
The first-ever human trial of a genital-chlamydia vaccine suggests that it is safe and effective, according to a new study published in the Lancet. U.S. sexually transmitted illness diagnoses have reached new highs for the past four years in a row, and chlamydia is responsible for the bulk of those infections: 1.7 million cases were diagnosed in 2017 alone, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, compared to about 550,000 cases of gonorrhea, 40,000 cases of HIV and 30,000 cases of syphilis. Globally, the problem is even more widespread: about 127 million cases were diagnosed in 2016, according to ...
This article aims to present the hepatitis B (hepatitis B surface antigen - HBsAg) and C (anti-HCV) seroprevalence estimates and risk factors as per the 8th edition of the Conscript Survey performed in 2016. This cross-sectional study was conducted among conscripts across Brazil aged 17 to 22 years from August to December 2016. It included a self-reported questionnaire and blood testing for syphilis, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and hepatitis B and C. In total 38,247 conscripts were enrolled; after applying exclusion criteria, 37,282 conscripts were included. The estimated HBsAg and anti-HCV prevalence rates were ...
Conclusion: Global estimates of prevalence and incidence of these four curable sexually transmitted infections remain high. The study highlights the need to expand data collection efforts at country level and provides an initial baseline for monitoring progress of the World Health Organization global health sector strategy on sexually transmitted infections 2016-2021. CONCLUSIONS The GM (1,1) model was predictive for the incidence of STDs in 31 provinces in China. The predicted incidence rates of AIDS and syphilis showed an upward trend. Regional distribution of the major STDs highlights the need for targeted prevention and control programs. PMID: 31361737 [PubMed - in process]
