Change is in the air: Reclaiming ancestral wisdom through Birthing on Country in Australia

For more than 60,000 years, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families have lived and birthed on the Country of their ancestors. Over this time and until the period of colonisation, Birthing on Country was an uninterrupted practice for families. In the last decade in Australia, much discussion has taken place nationally on reclaiming Birthing on Country for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women. A commitment was made in 2011 by the Australian Health Ministers ’ Conference1 to implement a National Maternity Services Plan over a period of five years.
