New Organization Forms to Confront the Epidemic of Popcorn Lung
Prompted by the statements of anti-tobacco groups throughout the country claiming that vaping causes popcorn lung, a new organization was launched this past Thursday to confront this new and alarming epidemic among young people. The organization is called the American Popcorn Lung Association (APLA) and it has aTwitter feed (@LungPopcorn)." Popcorn lung " is a serious, progressive lung disease that is technically known as bronchiolitis obliterans. The disease results in obstruction of the smallest airways in the lung. The disease is irreversible and can be fatal. A lung transplant is the only definitive treatment. The most common cause of popcorn lung is inflammation following a lung transplant. But it has also been associated with exposure to toxic fumes, especially with extremely high exposure to the chemical diacetyl, which occurred in a group of popcorn factory workers (hence the name popcorn lung).Popcorn lung is a very rare disease. Smoking is not recognized as a cause of popcorn lung and the disease is not observed in smokers (in the absence of other risk factors such as lung transplant). The Rest of the StoryDespite the presence of electronic cigarettes on the U.S. market for 13 years and despite the fact that there are literally millions of vapers, there has never been a confirmed case of popcorn lung occurring in a vaper. The annual incidence of popcorn lung among electronic cigarette users between 2007 and 2018 was 0.0 per 100,000. The current prevalence o...
Authors: Thien F, Davies JM, Hew M, Douglass JA, O'Hehir RE Abstract INTRODUCTION: Epidemic thunderstorm asthma (ETSA) is due to a complex interaction of environmental and individual susceptibility factors, with outbreaks reported globally over the last four decades. Australia has been particularly susceptible with nearly half of episodes reported internationally, culminating in the catastrophic Melbourne 2016 event. AREAS COVERED: This narrative review focuses on primary research articles on thunderstorm asthma published since 2017 and relevant historical studies. Reported ETSA episodes are reviewed for common...
Conclusion: Mitigation of these effects by identifying subjects at risk and promoting dopaminergic homeostasis to help regulate stress-relative hypodopaminergia, attenuate fears, and prevent subsequent unwanted drug and non-drug RDS type addictive behaviors seems prudent. Update to Boxed Warning must include risks for abuse, misuse, addiction, physical dependence, withdrawal reaction
Authors: Wang Y, Zhao C, Huang D, Sun B, Wang Z Abstract Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) is a rare disease associated with high disability and mortality rates. A subset of patients do not respond to standard anticoagulation therapy, leading to the progression of CVST with hemorrhagic stroke, which represents a major challenge for its treatment. Severe hemorrhagic (SH)-CVST is life-threatening due to large hematoma, edema and/or cerebral hernia. Anticoagulation or thrombolytic therapy alone may lead to further aggravation of the hematoma. Stent retriever thrombectomy combined with long-term local thrombolysi...

Conclusions. Normalized peak VO2 ≤60% and VE/VCO2 ≥34 at 1 year after HTx are associated with the development of CAV.
Conclusions. A significant reduction in viral, fungal, and Nocardia IEps after heart transplantation was observed, most likely due to advancements in immunosuppression and preventive strategies, including pretransplant infectious diseases screening and antimicrobial prophylaxis.
Conclusions. Human islet isolates with insufficient beta-cell mass for implantation within 72 hours can be cultured for 96 hours and longer to combine multiple preparations in order to reach the desired beta-cell dose and therefore result in a better metabolic benefit.
