The existence of GEL improves the high mechanical strength based on the strong hydrogen bonds from PVA and GL, endowing the organohydrogels with excellent flexibility and biocompatibility. Especially, PVA/GEL/GL organohydrogels can maintain excellent mechanical flexibility at -25 °C, and possess remarkable non-drying even at 85 °C. It ...

Conclusion: A PPS development was observed in initially non-myopic patients of a family with unusually severe dominant RP. The PPS concerned only the area with relatively preserved outer retinal layers (outer nuclear layer and ellipsoid zone). How the outer retina could guide choroid and scleral remodelling remains unclear. PMID: 31438752 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Varlinskaya, Terrence DeakAbstractThe passage of time dictates the pace at which humans and other organisms age but falls short of providing a complete portrait of how environmental, lifestyle and underlying biological processes contribute to senescence. Two fundamental features of the human experience that change dramatically across the lifespan include social interactions and, for many, patterns of alcohol consumption. Rodent models show great utility for understanding complex interactions amon...

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there have now been153 reported cases of severe, acute lung disease caused by " vaping " across 19 states. Tragically, one of these cases resulted in a death. Most of the cases are occurring among youth or young adults. The acute disease appears to be taking the form of lipoid pnemonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome, and/or chemical pneumonitis.Physicians, health departments, and the CDC have almost uniformly informed the public that these cases are caused by " vaping " and have advised youth and young adults to avoid using " ...

Bordes-RichardAbstractThe catalytic performance of vanadyl pyrophosphate (VPP) catalysts in the oxidation of n-butane to maleic anhydride (MA) depends strongly on the display of the active and selective {0 0 1} faces, that may be controlled during the preparation of VOHPO4·0.5H2O precursor by solvothermal technique using C2 to C4 alkanoic alcohols. Intercalated metastable vanadyl-alkyl-phosphates were formed when linear alcohols (ethanol, n-butanol) were use...

Abstract Almost one in four women in Cambodia is a victim of physical, emotional or sexual violence. The study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the ways in which Cambodians see its causes and effects and to identify and analyse the cultural forces that underpin and shape its landscape. An ethnographic study was carried out with 102 perpetrators and survivors of emotional, physical and sexual violence against women and 228 key informants from the Buddhist and healing sectors. Their views and experiences of it were recorded-the popular idioms expressed and the symptoms of distress experienced by surv...

Methanol poisonings can produce significant toxicity in humans, including acidosis, blindness, and death. The current mainstay of therapy is alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) inhibition to prevent formation of formic acid and hemodialysis to correct acidosis and remove both parent compound and toxic metabolite. Folate has been recommended as an adjunctive therapy to increase formic acid oxidation into carbon dioxide and water. We retrospectively reviewed recommendation of folate therapy for methanol poisoning by our regional poison center from 2002 to 2012. One hundred two patients met inclusion criteria. Our findings demonstrat...

A 37-year-old woman is brought into the emergency department by EMS after being found down next to a bottle of an unknown substance. (See photo.) Her family said she was initially tearful and repeatedly mumbling, “I’m sorry,” and became progressively less responsive.   She was obtunded and intubated for airway protection upon arrival to the ED. Her initial vital signs were a temperature of 98.8°F, heart rate 110 bpm, blood pressure 187/118 mm Hg, respiratory rate 22 bpm, and pulse oximetry 98% on ventilator. Initial ABG reveals a pH 6.89, pCO2 16, pO2 174, and bicarbonate 3.1. Pertinent lab resul...
