This study explored the role of central sensitization (CS) pain in patients with various rheumatic diseases using the CS inventory (CSI).MethodsA total of 193 patients of mean age 50.72  ± 9.65 years were included; they were divided into four different groups in terms of their rheumatic diseases. Patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), spondyloarthropathy (SpA), osteoarthritis (OA), and fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) were evaluated in tertiary care rheumatology/pain medicine se ttings. Publication date: Available online 22 August 2019Source: Life SciencesAuthor(s): Mehana E. El-Sayed, Khafaga F. Asmaa, El-Blehi S. SamarAbstractExtensive degeneration of articular cartilage (AC) is a primary event in the pathogenesis of osteoarthritis (OA) and other types of joint and bone inflammation. OA results in the loss of joint function, usually accompanied by severe pain, and are the most common type of arthritis, affecting more than 10% of adults. The characteristic signs of OA are progressive cartilage destruction and, eventually, complete loss of chondrocytes. A key enzyme responsible for these degenerative chan...

Chronic musculoskeletal pain and disability dramatically reduce quality and quantity of life worldwide, disproportionately so in low- and middle-income countries. Complementary therapies not typically learned in conventional medical training have much to offer but are under-utilized. Prolotherapy is an injection-based complementary therapy supported by high-quality evidence for osteoarthritis, tendinopathy, and low back pain. Prolotherapy addresses causes of pain and disability at the tissue level, is straightforward to learn, and relies on common, inexpensive material, and requires no refrigeration. Not-for-profit organiz...

Conclusion: In this study, the coastal areas of South Korea carry a higher burden than the national population. Additionally, chronic diseases compose the majority of the health burden in coastal areas. Despite the limitation of data, YLD was the best tool available for evaluating the health outcomes in specific areas, and has the advantage of simplicity and timely analysis.

Temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJOA) is a prevalent source of temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD). Women are more commonly diagnosed with TMD and are more likely to seek care at tertiary orofacial pain clinics. Limited knowledge regarding mechanisms underlying temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain impairs development of improved pain management strategies. In a rat model of unilateral TMJOA, monosodium iodoacetate (MIA) produces joint pathology in a concentration-dependent manner. Unilateral MIA produces alterations in meal patterns in males and females without altering overnight time spent eating or weight acros...
