The Method of Activating Blood and Dredging Collaterals for Reducing Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Conclusions: The work involving studies of the effectiveness and safety on TCM for reducing CIPN proves to be encouraging. Herbs with the function of activating blood and dredging collaterals were found to potentially promote the curative effects as well as making improvements of SNCV and MNCV. However, in the future, more double-blind, multicenter, large-scale RCTs and more comprehensive researches are still required. PMID: 31281395 [PubMed]

ConclusionWithholding dexamethasone premedication in non-experiencing HSR patients after two previous cycles of weekly paclitaxel administration was safe and did not impact the higher incidence of HSR. A discontinuing dexamethasone protocol should be recommended generally in these patients, especially those with a high risk for steroid-induced side effects.

The opioid epidemic of the last 20 years has served to illustrate the powerful addictive properties of anything that binds to opioid receptors of the human brain. Lives are ruined by opioid addiction, more than 100 deaths now occurring every day from overdose as people either take more and more to overcome the partial tolerance or new potent drugs like fentanyl make their way into street versions. Drugs such as oxycodone, hydrocodone, and fentanyl bind to the brain’s opioid receptors provoking a “high” while causing the user to desire more opioids as partial tolerance develops. And make no mistake: Much o...

Conclusions:The incidence but not severity of CIPN is significantly higher in women treated with paclitaxel when compared to docetaxel. Fully understanding the differences in the development of CIPN between the taxanes is crucial for making treatment decisions and managing patients with breast cancer.Disclosure: Dr. Karafiath has nothing to disclose. Conclusions:Clinically defined CIPN occurred in 42% of patients. All patients reported sensory symptoms and a minority experienced motor or autonomic involvement. Preferential small fiber injury is unlikely to account for the poor sensitivity of NCS given normal IENFD and a similar degree of pin and vibratory sensory loss, suggesting a functional deficit rather than axonal degeneration accounts for neuropathic symptoms and signs in those with normal IENFD and NCS.Disclosure: Dr. Karafiath has nothing to disclose. The world's most celebrated athlete standing on the podium in Rio in honor of receiving yet another gold medal has something important in common with your lazy uncle throwing back a cold one in his Barcalounger. Yes, swimming powerhouse Michael Phelps, purple-spotted from cupping therapy, and your slovenly relative with a beer gut both share a bond -- a weakness in succumbing to the allure of voodoo medicine. Modern-day snake oil salesmen hawking quick cures and TV doctors peddling the latest diet miracle with blatantly ridiculous claims are everywhere on the tube, social media, the supermarket and old-fashioned billboards...

Objective:Assess the performance of clinical and surrogate measures of chemotherapy induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) severity. Background:CIPN affects over 1/3 of patients receiving neurotoxic chemotherapy causing pain, sensory loss and decreased quality of life. The diagnostic performance and patient focused clinical meaning of commonly used scales and surrogate measures have not been adequately assessed. Methods:Patients with breast, ovarian and endometrial cancer were evaluated prior to onset of neurotoxic chemotherapy and at 3-6 month intervals. Quantitative symptom (NTSS-6), exam (UENS), and quality of life (EORTC...

Abstract In Spain, around 26,000 cases of breast cancer are diagnosed each year, representing nearly 30% of all cancers in women. The aim this study was to compare the perceptions of nonhematologic toxicities after administration of a docetaxel, epirubicin, and cyclophosphamide (TEC) regimen between breast cancer patients and oncologists. Furthermore, the relationship between such adverse events and quality of life (QOL) was evaluated. Cross‐sectional study carried out among 92 breast cancer patients who received TEC as neoadjuvant or adjuvant treatment. The main nonhematologic toxicities experienced by breast cancer pat...

Conclusions: The combination was well tolerated, the RP2D is 36mg/m2 ADI-PEG 20 weekly with pemetrexed 500 mg/m2 and cisplatin 75 mg/m2 every 3 weeks. Robust clinical activity has been observed with 78% pt having PR as best response on CT scan, as well as PR and SD in2 pt with sarcomatoid mesothelioma. The tolerability and response / disease control rate suggest that this combination may have clinical utility as first line treatment for these malignancies in ASS1-deficient pt. RP2D expansion cohorts are ongoing for pt with pleural mesothelioma or non-squamous NSCLC.Citation Format: Simon Pacey, James F. Spicer, Pui Ying Ch...
