Updated Methods for Assessing Risk of Progression to Late AMD

Because age-related macular degeneration (AMD) has been and remains a leading cause of bilateral blindness, the fellow eye of patients with unilateral neovascular AMD has been studied intensively during the past 50 years. These investigations have aimed to identify the characteristics of eyes and patients that affect the risk of second eye involvement, not only to inform patients of their prognosis but also to increase knowledge about the pathological processes that are involved in the development and progression of AMD.
