Landmark Results Achieved in Aging and Chronic Disease: Danish Group Extends Disease-free Life by 8 Years

By WILLIAM H. BESTERMANN JR., MD New Scientific Breakthroughs Can Provide a Longer Healthier Life Twenty-one years of follow-up comparing usual care with a protocol-driven team-based intervention in diabetes proved that healthy life in humans can be prolonged by 8 years. These results were achieved at a lower per patient per year cost. Aging researchers have been confident that we will soon be able to prolong healthy life. This landmark study shows this ambitious goal can be achieved now with lifestyle intervention and a few highly effective proven medications. These medications interfere with the core molecular biology that causes chronic disease and aging. These same medications will likely produce similar results in patients with congestive heart failure, chronic kidney disease, arterial disease, history of heart attack, hypertension, and angina. Simple medical interventions can extend healthy lifespan today. Better Chronic Disease Management Can Improve Health and Lower Costs 90% of health care costs come from chronic diseases and aging which are both related. The same biochemistry that causes aging causes chronic disease. Eating processed food, gaining weight, smoking cigarettes, and sitting on the couch accelerate aging and chronic condition development. Those activities switch on genes that should be quiet. Eating real food, avoiding cigarettes, activity, lisinopril, losartan, atorvastatin, metformin, (and spironolactone) are now proven to extend healthy li...

Authors: Ismaiil LA, Joumaa WH, Moustafa ME Abstract The excessive exposure of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) to electromagnetic radiation (EMR) from mobile phones or their base stations antenna may influence oxidative stress and development of diabetic complications. Here, we investigated the effects of exposing type 2 diabetic rats to EMR of 900 MHz emitted from GSM mobile phone antenna for 24 hours/day over a period of 28 days on hyperglycemia and hepatic oxidative stress. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into 4 groups (12 rats/group): control rats, normal rats exposed to EMR, ...

Authors: Barton BB, Zagler A, Engl K, Rihs L, Musil R Abstract The information on prevalence of obesity, diabetes, metabolic syndrome (MetS) and cardiovascular risk (CVR) and on sociodemographic variables available in patients with psychiatric diseases about to be treated with weight gain-associated medication (e.g., clozapine, mirtazapine, quetiapine) is limited. In a naturalistic study, psychiatric inpatients (age: 18-75) of all F diagnoses according to ICD-10, who were about to be treated with weight gain-associated medication, were included. Demographic variables were assessed as well as biological parameters t...

Authors: Namboodiri V, George S, Singh SP Abstract The Mental Healthcare Act 2017 replaced the Mental Health Act 1987, subsequent to India's ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in 2007. The Mental Healthcare Act (MHCA) 2017 upholds patient autonomy, dignity, rights and choices during mental healthcare and thus marks a bold step in India's mental health legislation. This new Law marks a major shift in the way mental healthcare is delivered, as it aims to protect and promote the rights of people during the delivery of mental healthcare. Within this Act, a capacitou...

CONCLUSIONS: Participants with both diabetes and at least 1 AD risk factor (ie, Obj-SCD, APOE ε4, tau, and p-tau positivity) demonstrated faster functional decline compared with those without both risk factors (diabetes or AD). These findings have implications for early identification of, and perhaps earlier intervention for, diabetic individuals at risk for future functional difficulty. CONCLUSIONS: FUT8 deficiency suppressed migration of MCF-7 cells by impacting core fucosylation of E-cadherin and the downstream FAK/integrin pathway. Therefore, FUT8 is a potential biomarker for breast cancer detection and treatment. PMID: 31306109 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Authors: Zou SL, Chen YL, Ge ZZ, Qu YY, Cao Y, Kang ZX Abstract Growing evidence have revealed the serum exosomal miRNAs emerged as biomarkers for various cancer types, including colorectal cancer (CRC). Here, we sought to explore the potential clinical significance of serum exosomal miR-150-5p in CRC. A total of 133 CRC patients and 60 healthy volunteers as control group were recruited in this study. Exosomes were isolated from the serum of all the participants. The total RNA was isolated from the exosomes and the serum exosomal miR-150-5p levels were measured by quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain...

This study was to explore the prognostic value of connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) expression in endometrial cancer (EC). METHODS: We compared CTGF expression in 198 samples from patients with endometrial cancer and 50 samples from patients with healthy endometrial tissues as determined by immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: Expression of CTGF was significantly higher in endometrial cancers as compared to normal endometrial tissues. Positive CTGF expression displayed a strong association with CA125 level, histological grade, depth of myometrial invasion and the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics...

CONCLUSIONS: MiR-153 regulates gefitinib resistance by modulating expression of ABCE1 in lung cancers. Our findings may provide a worthwhile therapeutic target to reverse gefitinib resistance in lung cancers in the future. PMID: 31306106 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

CONCLUSIONS: The level of serum microRNA-1290 in ESCC patients increased significantly, and its expression level could reflect the progress of ESCC, suggesting that serum microRNA-1290 might be a useful diagnostic and prognostic marker of ESCC. PMID: 31306104 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
