Outcomes of Patients with Disease Recurrence After Treatment for Locally Advanced Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Detected by Routine Follow-up CT Scans Versus a Symptom Driven Evaluation

Lung cancer continues to be the leading cause of cancer-related death in the U.S. [1] Approximately 75% of patients with locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer (LANSCLC, stage IIIa/b 7th edition AJCC) receiving definitive multimodal treatment that includes chemoradiotherapy with or without surgery will recur. Given the high rates of recurrence, most patients are followed with intensive surveillance strategies that typically involve CT imaging at set intervals post-treatment with the hope that early detection of recurrence or a new primary cancer may improve outcome.
