Avastin Improves Quality of Life for Mesothelioma Patients

A research team from France has documented the health-related quality-of-life benefits of adding Avastin (bevacizumab) to chemotherapy for pleural mesothelioma patients, endorsing its addition to standard-of-care treatment. The recent quality-of-life analysis was a secondary endpoint of an earlier, multicenter clinical trial in France that showed an almost three-month median survival improvement when adding Avastin. The latest study demonstrated that adding Avastin to cisplatin and Alimta (pemetrexed) did not negatively impact quality of life — a problem with several other cancers because of the increased toxicity. “Contrasting results of health-related quality of life have been reported with the combination in different types of tumors,” Dr. Virginie Westeel, co-author and head of thoracic oncology at University Hospital in Besancon, France, told The Mesothelioma Center at Asbestos.com. “Therefore, it was really important to be specifically verified in malignant pleural mesothelioma. Patients should be aware of the findings.” Clinical Cancer Research published the study in June 2019. Avastin Helped Reduce Pain The authors reported that the addition of Avastin improved quality-of-life measures specifically for peripheral neuropathy and pain dimension. With peripheral neuropathy, the deterioration-free survival time jumped from 7.6 months to more than a year by adding Avastin. With the pain dimension, deterioration-free survival time went from 9...

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance of a new plasma based CRC screening assay, SpecColon test, which tested methylated SFRP2 and SDC2 simultaneously in a single qPCR reaction, in detecting CRC and advan...

Conclusion. This large systematic review of over 11,000 participants demonstrates that topical diclofenac is effective for acute pain, such as sprains and strains, with minimal AEs. The effectiveness of topical diclofenac was also demonstrated in chronic musculoskeletal pain, such as osteoarthritis, but with a higher NNT (worse) compared with acute pain. Again, the incidence of AEs was low. Formulation does play a part in effectiveness, and studies are needed to investigate this further. Studies of chronic pain outside of osteoarthritis would also be helpful. PMID: 31944135 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Conclusion: Advanced RCC has high morbidity and mortality with an increasing prevalence. Following tyrosine kinase inhibitors, checkpoint inhibitors have a great influence on treatment of advanced RCC, especially the combination of these two strategies. In 2019 these combined strategies demonstrated 5% complete remission with up to 60% objective response rate. While not immediately, but perhaps in the near future, advanced RCC will become a manageable chronic disease, even if a cure is not possible. PMID: 31942809 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Polyamidoamine/gold nanoparticles (PAMAM/AuNPs) were used to increase the conductivity and enhance the number of antibodies (Ab) immobilized on the electrode surface. Three-dimensional reduced graphene oxide-multiwall carbon nanotubes (3DrGO-MWCNTs) were used to modify the glass...

ConclusionsIn pediatric total thyroidectomies, central neck dissection and gross extrathyroidal extension were major predictors for overall hypoparathyroidism. Surgeons performing thyroidectomy in such patients should be aware of the relatively high risk, preserve parathyroid tissue to the extent possible, and be conscientious regarding postoperative calcium monitoring and replacement.
