Comment on: Pain and nausea after bariatric surgery with total intravenous anesthesia versus desflurane anesthesia - a double blind, randomized, controlled trial

Over the past 5 years the world of surgery, and including bariatric and weight loss surgery, has begun to embrace enhanced recovery pathways. An important part of the pathway is the delivery of anesthesia and what measures we can take to decrease post op nausea, vomiting and pain. In particular it is well described in weight loss surgery patients that post op nausea occurs as a direct result of anesthesia, and it ’s unclear whether any difference on post op nausea, vomiting and pain exists when comparing total intravenous anesthesia (TIVA) to the standard inhaled anesthestics [1, 2].
