After my tick bite I realised that the climate crisis was a more likely culprit than any conspiracy theory about weaponisationThe first indication I ’d picked up a tick-borne disease three years ago was the excruciating arthritic pain in my feet as I hobbled to a dinner party at a neighbour’s house in Jerusalem.Later that night I experienced flu-like symptoms, including a raging fever that, even with antibiotics, would last for more than a week.Continue reading...

A recent article in Dark Daily convinced me that we need a new definition for direct-to-consumer (DTC) lab testing which has also been called direct-access-testing (DAT) (see:Direct-to-Consumer Lab Test Start-Up EverlyWell Puts Clinical Laboratory Tests on Shelves at CVS and Target). The bacterial flagellar motor is a molecular machine that can rotate the flagellar filament at high speed. The rotation is generated by the stator-rotor interaction, coupled with an ion flux through the torque-generating stator. Here we employed cryo-electron tomography to visualize the intact flagellar motor in the Lyme disease spirochete,Borrelia burgdorferi. By analyzing the motor structures of wild-type and stator-deletion mutants, we not only localized the stator complexin situ, but also revealed the stator-rotor interaction at an unprecedented detail. Importantly, the stator-rotor interaction induces a conformational...

The “Christmas tree” orientation of scaling lesions along the skin tension (Langer) lines in pityriasis rosea is well known. This pattern is best appreciated on complete examination of the trunk, in which the eruption follows the long axis of the V-shaped lines of the upper chest and back, emanating around the axillae, and running transversely along the abdominal wall and lower back. Secondary syphilis has a similar presentation. When patients present with asymptomatic, larger, nonscaling patches along Langer lines, another condition deserves diagnostic consideration.
