An Stx-EAEC O59:NMH19 strain isolated from a hemolytic uremic syndrome case in Argentina.

In this study, we report an HUS case associated with an O59:NM[H19] strain, harboring stx2a, iha, lpfAO26, lpfAO113 genes associated with STEC, and aatA, aap, pic, sigA, agg4A genes associated with enteroaggregative E. coli (EAEC), named Stx-EAEC. The strain showed low toxicity on Vero cells, and was resistant to streptomycin and trimethoprim/sulfonamides. The child carried the bacteria for more than 100 days. Since the large outbreak associated with Stx-EAEC O104:H4, many strains with similar profiles have been described. In Germany, an O59:NM[H19] strain, with comparable characteristics to the Argentine strain, was isolated from a bloody diarrhea case. In Argentina, this is the first report of an HUS case associated with a Stx-EAEC infection, and represents a new challenge for the surveillance system. We examined 252 rectal swabs obtained from 134 roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), 97 red deer (Cervus elaphus) and 21 fallow deer (Dama dama) in north-eastern Poland. ConclusionsSTEC prevalence among young children with diarrhea in Romania was high and the risk of HUS is emerging. The establishment of a systematic laboratory-based surveillance program including identification of the circulating STEC strains coupled with epidemiological investigation of HUS patients is warranted to determine the source and mode of transmission of STEC and prevent of STEC-associated diarrhea and HUS.

We report an outbreak of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) associated paediatric haemolytic uraemic syndrome linked to the consumption of raw cow's milk soft cheeses. From 25 March to 27 May 2019, 16 outbreak cases infected with STEC O26 (median age: 22 months) were identified. Interviews and trace-back investigations using loyalty cards identified the consumption of raw milk cheeses from a single producer. In this study, we found that an E. coli O26:H11 strain that produces both Stx1a and Stx2a was virulent in streptomycin- and ciprofloxacin-treated mice and that mice were protected by administration of an anti-Stx2 antibody.
