Effect of weight loss on neutrophil resolvins in the metabolic syndrome.

There is increasing evidence for a positive association between low-grade inflammation and obesity and insulin resistance [1-6]. The ongoing low-grade inflammation could in part be due to failed resolution to an inflammatory challenge. The inflammatory response requires recruitment of neutrophils as the first line of host defence to a pathogen and is controlled by prostaglandins and leukotrienes that derive from arachidonic acid (AA). Leukotriene B4 (LTB4) and chemokines cause neutrophil aggregation, adhesion, and degranulation.
