Controversies in Rheumatology

Rheumatology is a relatively young subspecialty, first recognized in 1925 when the International Committee on Rheumatism was founded by Jan van Breeman at the first meeting of the International Society of Medical Hydrology in Paris.1 As such, research into the pathophysiology, clinical presentation, and treatment of the rheumatic diseases and the development of classification criteria for individual conditions continues to advance, as our subspecialty is poised to enter its second century.
