The Central Role of Professional Development and Psychiatry

The pace of new knowledge and new skills is ever accelerating in health care. Professional development (PD) is necessary to equip physicians and other health care providers with the skills to adapt to new roles, respond to challenges, and integrate new knowledge into their clinical practices. In this issue, Hilty and colleagues have defined PD as a wide variety of specialized training, formal education, and/or advanced professional learning intended to help clinicians, teachers, researchers, and administrators improve their professional knowledge, competence, skill, and effectiveness.
