Four new cucurbitane-type triterpenes from Momordica charantia L. with their cytotoxic activities and protective effects on H 2 O 2 -damaged pancreatic cells

AbstractFour new cucurbitane-type triterpenes were isolated from the fruit ofMomordica charantia L. The structures of the new compounds were identified based on HR-ESI-MS and 1D- and 2D-NMR spectroscopic methods. The cytotoxicity of the isolated compounds was evaluated using three human cancer cell lines, HeLa, Caco2, and U87. Compound3 exhibited significant cytotoxic activity against HeLa cells with an IC50 value of 11.18  μM. Additionally, the cytoprotective activity of these compounds was determined in vitro against H2O2-induced pancreatic injury. The results revealed that all the compounds obtained possess cytoprotective effects against H2O2-induced injury in MIN6 β-cells at a concentration of 10 μM.

We describe a contiguous gene deletion of the ATM locus in a multi-generation family of Italian descent with a strong family history of pancreatic cancer. A deletion of one copy of the entire ATM gene was identified by routine panel testing and further characterized by chromosomal microarray analysis. An 11q22.3 microdeletion of approximately 960kb was identified that is predicted to result in loss of 10 genes including ATM. The deletion was identified in two additional family members including a presymptomatic daughter and an affected sibling. A normal disomic complement of the 11q22.3 region was detected in a third famil...

CONCLUSIONS: Increased expression of miR-233 was associated with CDDP resistance in pancreatic cancer cells. Inhibition of miR-223 expression upregulated FoxO3a expression, restrained pancreatic cancer cell proliferation, promoted cell apoptosis, and enhanced CDDP sensitivity in pancreatic cancer cells. Leone Aglietta Surgical resection remains the only treatment that offers a potential chance of long-term survival. Unfortunately, about 80% of patients treated with curative intent will develop recurrence. Since 2001, adjuvant therapy with gemcitabine or 5-fluorouracyle was recommended. This approach allows a median overall survival (OS) of around 23 months, and 5-year survival of 22%. In recent years, two phase-3 trials investigating new chemotherapy regimens resulted in considerably improved survival times. The doublet gemcitabine–capecitabine has shown improvement in OS from 25.5 to 28 months (p = 0...

Pancreatic cancer is a rare cancer that carries a poor 5 year survival rate of approximately 5% [1]. Approximately 5% to 10% of individuals with pancreatic cancer report having a closely related family member also being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer [2]. Several known genetic syndromes, such as hereditary breast-ovarian cancer syndrome (HBOC) [3], Lynch syndrome [4], familial adenomatous polyposis [5], familial atypical multiple mole melanoma syndrome [6], hereditary pancreatitis [7], Peutz-Jeghers syndrome [8], and Li-Fraumeni syndrome [9] are associated with increased risk of pancreatic cancer.

ConclusionAlteration in the cell cycle by means of different mechanisms such as inflammation, alteration in cell signaling, invasion and immune evasion, specific niche colonization, induction of DNA damage and mutation, expression of some microRNAs, and enhancing epigenetic effects are the most common mechanisms employed by bacterial species.

AbstractPurposeDespite advances in various treatment modalities, surgical resection for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDA) remains the only curative treatment. Data remains limited regarding survival rates for resectable PDA when managed by a multidisciplinary pancreas conference (MDPC). The aim of this study is to assess survival rates, identify significant predictors of mortality, and assess the benefits of adjuvant chemotherapy for resectable PDA following presentation at a MDPC.MethodsAll patients presented from April 2013 to August 2016 with resectable PDA were discussed at a MDPC at a tertiary care center and wer...
