Depression, antidepressants and the risk of cardiovascular events and death in older men

Depression is a leading cause of years of life lost due to disability worldwide [1]. Its presence is also associated with increased medical morbidity and mortality [2], including higher than expected incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) events. A recent systematic review and meta-analysis reported that people with depression have 30-87% higher risk of experiencing an ischaemic heart disease (IHD) event, with depression accounting for 3% of the disability-adjusted life years associated with IHD [3].
