Advanced diagnostics for pancreatic cysts: Confocal endomicroscopy and molecular analysis.

Advanced diagnostics for pancreatic cysts: Confocal endomicroscopy and molecular analysis. World J Gastroenterol. 2019 Jun 14;25(22):2734-2742 Authors: Durkin C, Krishna SG Abstract Technological advances and the widespread use of medical imaging have led to an increase in the identification of pancreatic cysts in patients who undergo cross-sectional imaging. Current methods for the diagnosis and risk-stratification of pancreatic cysts are suboptimal, resulting in both unnecessary surgical resection and overlooked cases of neoplasia. Accurate diagnosis is crucial for guiding how a pancreatic cyst is managed, whether with surveillance for low-risk lesions or surgical resection for high-risk lesions. This review aims to summarize the current literature on confocal endomicroscopy and cyst fluid molecular analysis for the evaluation of pancreatic cysts. These recent technologies are promising adjuncts to existing approaches with the potential to improve diagnostic accuracy and ultimately patient outcomes. PMID: 31235996 [PubMed - in process]

We examined whether advanced MRI analysis techniques have the capacity to detect brain injury (particularly white matter injury) caused by chronic hypoxia-induced fetal growth restriction in newborn preterm lambs.MethodsSurgery was undertaken in twin bearing pregnant ewes at 88–90 days gestation (term = 150 days) to induce FGR in one fetus. At 127 days gestation (~32 weeks human brain development), FGR and control (appropriate for gestational age, AGA) lambs were delivered by caesarean section, intubated and ventilated. Conventional and advanced brain imaging was conducted within the first two hours of li...

Utilizing data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 97 (NLSY97), this paper reveals that there is a positive association between both drinking habits and marijuana use in the long run, indicating that alcohol and marijuana are complements. However, in the short run, the association between marijuana and alcohol varies based on different drinkin...

CogburnAbstractOver the last two decades, there has been a global push to improve maternal health by increasing numbers of facility births in low- and middle-income countries like Tanzania. While recent scholarship has interrogated the increasing hegemony of numbers and metrics in global health, few have ethnographically explored how this push for numbers and its accompanying technologies affect the lived experiences of parturients and those who care for them during pregnancy and childbirth in rural communities. Based o...

This study investigated the association of the five-factor model and trait emotional intelligence (trait EI) with camouflaging behaviours (masking and compensating for autistic characteristics) in a large sample of 278 autistic and 230 typically developing (TD) participants. Participants completed questionnaires assessing autistic traits, big five personality, trait EI, and social camouflaging of autistic traits. Camouflaging was negatively related to extraversion, agreeableness, and conscientiousness, while it was positively related to neuroticism. Trait EI was also negatively linked to camouflaging. The differences betwe...

We examined consequences of work-family guilt with an interview study (N = 28) and daily diary study (N = 123). The interview study revealed that as a result of work-family guilt, parents tended to either reappraise the situation (e.g., emphasizing financial importance of work) or compensate for their guilt by adapting their parenting, adapting their work, and by sacrificing their leisure. Consistently, the diary study (where mothers completed online daily questionnaires over 8 consecutive days) revealed that higher work-family guilt was related to more traditional gender behaviors in mothers. Specifically, mothers...
