Heart disease and cancer are the leading causes of death in the U.S. In women the clinical appearance of both entities — coronary heart disease and cancer (breast, endometrium and ovary) escalate during the decades of the midlife transition encompassing the menopause. In addition to the impact of aging, during the interval between age 40 and 65 years the pathophysiologic components of the Metabolic Syndrome also e merge and accelerate. These include visceral adiposity (measured as waist circumference), hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia.

AbstractHypertension (HTN) is a primary risk factor for cardiovascular (CV) events, target organ damage (TOD), premature death and disability worldwide. The pathophysiology of HTN is complex and influenced by many factors including biological sex. Studies show that the prevalence of HTN is higher among adults aged 60 and over, highlighting the increase of HTN after menopause in women. Estrogen (E2) plays an important role in the development of systemic HTN and TOD, exerting several modulatory effects. The influence of E2 leads to alterations in mechanisms regulating the sympathetic nervous system, renin-angiotensin-aldoste...

Conclusion: No clear association exists between polypropylene MUS placement and subsequent urethral diverticulum formation. Factors that diminish polypropylene mesh biocompatibility include elevated BMI, menopause, recurrent UTIs, prior pelvic surgeries, and preexisting medical conditions. Symptoms associated with urethral diverticula should prompt a complete urologic workup prior to MUS placement. PMID: 32462011 [PubMed - in process]

Conclusions: Menopause is a neglected issue in Bangladesh. Accurate and appropriate information regarding premenopause and menopause can help women cope with this life transition. Social and familial support may also play a role in minimizing isolation and depression. Public health messaging to increase awareness and knowledge about menopause should be undertaken to overcome the stigma and shame associated with menopause in Bangladesh. Objective: To test the hypothesis that a family history of premature myocardial infarction (FHPMI) will modify the associations between bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy (BSO) and mortality due to heart disease (HD), cardiovascular disease (CVD), or all-cause mortality with stronger associations observed for BSO occurring before 45 years. Methods: We analyzed data from 2,763 postmenopausal women aged 40 years or older who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1988-1994) and were followed through December 31, 2015. Cox regression was used to estimate adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% co...
