Paraneoplastic Limbic Encephalitis Complicated with Small Cell Lung Cancer at the Time of Recurrence

In this study, we reported the case of a 74-year-old Japanese woman who developed PLE after partial remission of small cell lung cancer (SCLC) by first-line systemic chemotherapy. Brain magnetic resonance imaging showed no metastatic tumor or cerebrovascular disease. Anti-glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD) and anti-amphiphysin antibodies were detected in her serum. She was diagnosed as having PLE related to the recurrence of SCLC and received high-dose glucocorticoid, and sequentially systemic chemotherapy with amrubicin. Unfortunately, these treatments did not improve her disease progression and she died 4 months later. Although PLE rarely occurs at the time of SCLC recurrence, physicians should pay attention to PLE onset even after chemotherapy.Case Rep Oncol 2019;12:466 –472

JohnsonAbstractEpidemiologic evidence indicates that regular use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) provides a protective effect against the development of colorectal, breast, and head and neck cancers. Genomic characterization of these cancers has lent considerable insight into the subpopulations of cancer patients who are most likely to benefit from NSAID therapy. The PIK3CA gene encodes the catalytic subunit of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) and...

WengAbstractT-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL) is an aggressive cancer, characterized by an uncontrolled expansion and accumulation of T-cell progenitors. During leukemic progression, immature T cells grow abnormally and occupy the bone marrow compartment, thereby interfering with the production of normal blood cells. Pediatric T-ALL is curable with intensive chemotherapy, but there are significant, long-term side effects and ∼20% of patients suf...

GBM is a heterogeneous group of brain tumors, is highly prone to develop resistance and likely to recur. In the context of GBM, the delivery of anti-cancer drugs is challenging because the blood brain barrier (BBB) restricts the passage of small molecules. Currently, nanomedicines based on liposome...

This study analyzed the characteristics of PD-L1 expression and used immunohistochemistry to assess CD8 and CD4 tumor-infiltrating leucocytes (TILs) in 478 cases of gastric cancer compared with the expression patterns in 70 matched adjacent tissues, and 32 cases of benign gastric tissues. Standardized methods for TILs assessment in gastric cancer were used. RESULTS The results indicated that PD-L1 expression was increased in gastric cancer tissues (193 out of 478, 40.37%) compared with matched adjacent tissues (14 out of 70, 20.00%) and benign gastric tissues (10 out of 32, 31.25%). It was observed that in gastric cancer p...

Authors: Albasri AM, Elkablawy MA Abstract OBJECTIVES: To examine the androgen receptor (AR) status in colorectal cancer (CRC) patients by the immunohistochemical method and to correlate the findings with all available clinicopathological parameters of prognostic significance. METHODS: Archival tumor samples were studied using immunohistochemistry for AR expression in 324 patients with CRC. Patients were diagnosed at the Pathology Department at a tertiary care Hospital, Al-Madinah Al-Munawarah, Saudi Arabia, between January 2006 and December 2017. RESULTS: There is a complete lack of AR expression in normal...

We report a case of a patient with chronic inflammatory rheumatism, psoriasis and Hashimoto thyroiditis and subsequent appearance of static and dynamic ataxia and episodic memory deficit who was diagnosed as PLE combined with small cell lung cancer (SCLC). Diagnoses: The diagnosis of SCLC was made with EBUS-TBNA of a mediastinal lymph node. Interventions: Whole-body 18F-FDG PET/CT was performed for the initial staging of SCLC, in the planning of radiotherapy treatment, to evaluate therapeutic response and in the follow-up. A dedicated brain scan was included to the same PET session. Whole-body contrast enhanced compu...

Clinical case reports can be powerful and informative; they can suggest novel hypotheses, identify gaps of knowledge, and provide suggestions for improvement. In this issue of Neurology® Neuroimmunology &Neuroinflammation, Hottinger et al.1 report a fascinating case with interesting implications. The authors describe a 71-year-old woman with metastatic small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) who developed anti-Hu–associated paraneoplastic encephalitis 4 days after receiving treatment with immune checkpoint inhibitors (nivolumab and ipilimumab). Considering that this disorder is mediated by cytotoxic T cells against a f...
