Chlor-Alkali Industry Wants Exception to Proposed US Asbestos Ban

The influential American Chemistry Council in Washington, D.C., would likely drop its opposition to an across-the-board ban on asbestos provided an exemption remains for the chlor-alkali industry. Mike Walls, ACC vice president for regulatory affairs, clarified his position last month during a congressional Environment and Climate Change subcommittee hearing to discuss the latest legislative effort to ban all asbestos. “We certainly are not opposing a ban for all other uses of asbestos. I just want to make that clear,” Walls said. “The ACC’s opposition [on legislation] is focused on the impact on the chlor-alkali industry, and the supply of chlorine to this nation.” Lawmakers will soon be debating the Alan Reinstein Ban Asbestos Now Act of 2019, which would prohibit the manufacture, processing and distribution of asbestos in all forms. It would take effect one year after enactment. An estimated 10,000 people in the U.S. die each year from asbestos-related diseases such as mesothelioma, lung cancer and asbestosis. Walls said that taking asbestos away from the chlor-alkali industry, which already is highly regulated, would have a wide-reaching negative effect, leaving manufacturers without a viable short-term alternative. “A blanket ban that includes the chlor-alkali industry’s use of asbestos would have significant impact on the supply of chlorine, which could in turn jeopardize public health,” he said. “Chlorine is essent...

Background: Pemetrexed is an antifolate cytostatic drug that targets multiple enzymes involved in folate biosynthesis and is indicated for treatment of non–small-cell lung cancer and malignant pleural mesothelioma. As evidence for an exposure–response/toxicity relationship is accumulating, dose individualization using therapeutic drug monitoring may be a feasible strategy to optimize treatment. The purpose of this study was to develop a simple, sensitive, high-performance liquid chromatography method with UV detection for quantification of pemetrexed levels in human plasma. Method: The method involves a si...

Here, the clinicopathological and immunohistochemical characteristics of calretinin-positive lung cancer were examined to reduce confusion with malignant mesothelioma. Calretinin expression in 307 consecutive cases of lung cancer was evaluated immunoh...

A patient diagnosed with pleural and peritoneal mesothelioma today can survive well beyond expectations, provided personalized treatment can be found at a specialty center. Research from the Columbia University Medical Center in New York City has shown that despite the poor prognosis typically accompanies this rare diagnosis, patients still can thrive. “This is an understudied, and poorly understood, group of patients that often is just written off,” surgical oncologist Dr. Michael Kluger at Columbia told The Mesothelioma Center at Asbestos.com. “But we’ve shown a meaningful survival.” Kluger,...

Officials with USA Water Polo are confident that organizers of the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics will fix an ongoing asbestos issue at the water polo venue for this year’s games. Japanese newspaper The Asahi Shimbun originally reported that officials had discovered asbestos-containing insulation in at least two locations of the Tatsumi International Swimming Center in 2017. But the human carcinogen was not removed during renovations to the arena. Exposure to asbestos is the primary cause of mesothelioma, a deadly cancer with no definitive cure. Following reports of the asbestos issue, Tokyo 2020 organizers are taking...

Conclusion: In addition to asbestos-related mortality in occupational exposure groups, this initial follow-up of this cohort also shows elevated mortality for some asbestos-related causes in non-occupational exposure groups.

Systemic chemotherapy remains the mainstay of treatment for patients with unresectable malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM). In 2003, the EMPHACIS trial established cisplatin and pemetrexed as the standard of care for first-line treatment of advanced mesothelioma [1]. More recently, the MAPS trial provided the first randomised demonstration of efficacy of a targeted therapy in mesothelioma, with the addition of bevacizumab to cisplatin and pemetrexed chemotherapy providing a small incremental survival benefit over chemotherapy alone, increasing median survival from16.1 to 18.8 months [2].
