SummaryObjectiveTo assess the level of physical fitness of sedentary children and adolescents with intellectual disability (ID) included in specialized institution in Kinshasa.Material and methodsA total of 110 children were included in this study, 60 with ID (12.4 ± 4 years) and 50 without ID (11.6 ± 4 years). Flexibility, explosive strength, grip strength, abdominal endurance and cardiorespiratory endurance tests were administered. They are supplemented by the measurement of anthropometric characteristics.ResultsMeasurements of explosive force, isometric force and walking distance were significantly higher in boys compared to girls (p < 0.05). The latter have a flexibility capacity that is significantly greater than that of boys (p < 0.05). The explosive strength, isometric strength and cardiorespiratory endurance of the child group with ID are significantly lower than those of the control group (p < 0.05).ConclusionThis study has shown that physical fitness of sedentary children and adolescents with intellectual disabilities varies by gender and level of intellectual disability.
