Differences in refractive outcomes between phacoemulsification for cataract alone and combined phacoemulsification and vitrectomy for epiretinal membrane

Conclusion: Combined phacovitrectomy for concurrent cataract epiretinal membrane by experienced cataract and vitreoretinal surgeons seems to deliver as predictable refractive results as cataract surgery alone.

CONCLUSIONS Inconspicuous IOL malpositioning is one of the reasons responsible for decreased vision acuity after cataract surgery, which may not be easily identified by slit-lamp examination. High astigmatism and ocular higher-order aberrations derived from malpositioned IOL can be important clues.

CONCLUSIONS: In this prospective study, WTW diameter had minimal effects on the SIA in uncomplicated small-incisional cataract surgery through a 2.2 mm temporal or superotemporal CCI with a single surgeon. Our findings suggest that corneal diameter does not play a clinically significant role in this population undergoing small-incisional cataract surgery. PMID: 31564344 [PubMed - in process]

The prevalence of myopia is much higher than hyperopia. Hence, there are relatively few studies investigating phakic intraocular lens (pIOL) implantation for the correction of hyperopia. This review aimed to summarize the available relevant literature on the efficacy and safety of pIOL implantation for the correction of hyperopia and hyperopic astigmatism. At present, two types of pIOLs are used to correct hyperopia and hyperopic astigmatism: anterior chamber iris-fixated pIOLs and posterior chamber implantable collamer lenses.

Abstract PURPOSE: To evaluate the potential benefit of a new version of an online toric intraocular lens calculator in eyes implanted with a bitoric intraocular lens. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Retrospective observational comparative study in patients that underwent cataract surgery with implantation of the bitoric intraocular lens AT TORBI 709M (Carl Zeiss Meditec AG, Jena, Germany). Visual and refractive outcomes were evaluated at 1 month after surgery. The selection of the toric intraocular lens power was performed with the software Z CALC 2.0 (Carl Zeiss Meditec AG). The absolute refractive prediction e...

ConclusionsTo the best of our knowledge, this is the first report to describe corneal ectasia in a patient with keratoconus following phacoemulsification surgery. Cataract surgeons should provide extra caution to patients with keratoconus and take into consideration this rare but potentially sight-threatening complication.

Conclusion: Over 40% of the patients undergoing cataract surgery enrolled in this study had more than 1.0 D of corneal astigmatism and may benefit from the use of toric intraocular lenses. These data can be useful for planning to make this technology available fo r patients.RESUMO Objetivo: Avaliar a preval ência do astigmatismo corneano antes da cirurgia de catarata em pacientes brasileiros. Métodos: Este estudo transversal de base clínica foi realizado no Hospital Federal de Bonsucesso, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. Conclusion Patients with stage 2 or higher ROP remain at significant risk for ophthalmological morbidity through 2 years of age. Infants with regression of subthreshold ROP who do not require treatment represent an underrecognized population at long-term ophthalmological risk. ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier NCT01559571. Rationale: To report the visual status and results of phacoemulsification cataract surgery in a young patient with Alport syndrome associated with bilateral anterior lenticonus. The milestone of this report is the use of anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) to confirm the central protrusion of the anterior surface of the crystalline lens. Patient concerns: A 23-year-old young woman presented with severe progressive visual loss in both eyes, which started several years ago. Diagnoses: Refractive status was indicative of high myopia with astigmatism and vision was not improved with optimal correctio...

This 39-year-old patient has central keratoconus with more involvement in the left eye. Stability is relative in patients with keratoconus, and it is unclear whether her current complaints have been present since the initial ICL surgery 2 years prior or whether this represents progression of her corneal disease. Despite her current 20/30 UDVA, this patient is reporting blurry vision with diplopia. A rough estimate is that 1.0 D of ICL add power will correct about 0.7 D of refractive astigmatism at the corneal plane.
