Cognitive training for optimizing perioperative brain health

Two tsunamis are colliding: the “silver tsunami” of our aging population,1 and the “surgical tsunami” of growing numbers of surgical patients. The typical person undergoes nine surgical procedures in his or her lifetime, most after age 65.2 Optimizing perioperative brain health is a major clinical and public health concern ; it comprises mental health problems such as depression and anxiety, and cognitive health problems including delirium and cognitive impairment.
