In this study, we aimed to develop a risk prediction model to predict fast decline in the Aβ + MCI population using multimodal biomarkers. We included 186 Aβ + MCI patients who underwent florbetapir PET, brain MRI, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analyses, and FDG PET at baseline. We defined conversion to dementia within 3 years (= fast decline) as the outcome. The associations of potential covariates (MCI stage, APOE4 genotype, corrected hippocampal volume (HV), FDG PET SUVR, AV45 PET SUVR, CSF Aβ, total tau (t-tau), and phosphorylated tau (p-tau)) with the outcome were tested and nomograms were constru...

AbstractWhen managing behavioural changes in individuals with dementia in long-term care settings, non-pharmacological approaches should be the first-line option. However, evidence indicates that psychotropic medications are prescribed excessively in this patient population. Psychotropics can be successfully deprescribed by gradually withdrawing treatment, by taking a person-centred approach that actively involves residents, their family/support persons and multidisciplinary teams, by ensuring healthcare staff are well trained and supported by management, and by employing effective communication strategies.

AbstractThe field of thyroid hormone signaling has grown more complex in recent years. In particular, it has been suggested that some thyroid hormone derivatives, tentatively named “novel thyroid hormones” or “active thyroid hormone metabolites”, may act as independent chemical messengers. They include 3,5-diiodothyronine (T2), 3-iodothyronamine (T1AM), and several iodothyroacetic acids, i.e., 3,5,3’,5’-thyroacetic acid (TA4), 3,5,3’-thyroacetic acid (TA3), and 3 -thyroacetic acid (TA1). We summarize the present knowledge on these compounds, namely their biosynthetic pathways, endo...

Photo credit Chuttersnap It's not hard to understand why 60-year-olds would say that they want to remain in their home for life rather than move to assisted living or a nursing home. These are generally people who are relatively healthy and feel that they can hire help for whatever they need down the road. Indeed, aging in place sounds like a wonderful concept. What could possibly be wrong with it?  Read more on HealthCentral to learn about the pros and cons of assisted living vs. aging-in-place: Carol Bradley Bursack is the Candid Caregiver MedicareFAQ – Medicare Resource Center Support a caregiver or jump...

AbstractExpression of the transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 (TRPA1) receptor has been demonstrated not only in the dorsal root and trigeminal ganglia but also in different brain regions (e.g., hippocampus, hypothalamus, and cortex). However, data concerning their role in neurodegenerative and age-related diseases of the CNS is still indistinct. The aim of our study was to investigate the potential role of TRPA1 in a mouse model of senile dementia. For the investigation of changes during aging, we used male young (3 –4-month-old) and old (18-month-old) wild-type (TRPA1+/+;WT) and TRPA1 receptor gene-deleted (TRPA...

CONCLUSION: A high percentage (49-78%) of the participating nursing home residents without a pre-dementia diagnosis were assessed to have possible dementia based on screening with standardized tools, indicating a high degree of dementia underdiagnoses in Faroese nursing homes. This high prevalence of dementia is of significance for the clinical practice, running, and planning of nursing homes and pinpoints a need to act upon this, not only in the Faroes but also worldwide. Increased Neuronal Nuclear and Perikaryal Size in the Medial Mamillary Nucleus of Vascular Dementia and Alzheimer's Disease Patients: Relation to Nuclear Estrogen Receptor α. Dement Geriatr Cogn Disord. 2019 Jul 18;:1-7 Authors: Ishunina TA, Bogolepova IN, Swaab DF Abstract BACKGROUND: The hypothalamic medial mamillary (MMN) and the tuberomamillary (TMN) nuclei are important hubs in memory circuits. Previous studies determining the neuronal Golgi complex size showed decreased metabolic activity of the TMN neurons in both Alzhei-mer's disease (AD) and vascular dementia (VD), and no obvious decline...

DISCUSSION: Early-onset MCI was associated with substantial life years lost (5-6 years), but the loss was particularly pronounced for those with early-onset dementia, reducing the expected life length by 2 decades. PMID: 31319412 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

CONCLUSIONS: The mVAT is a reliable and valid measure of memory in non-Western immigrants. Clinicians and researchers should be aware that the memory performance of immigrants may be systematically underestimated when using tests with black-and-white line drawings, such as the original VAT.
