Do Antidepressants increase the risk of dementia?

The paper of Kodesh et al.1 in this volume reports an association between antidepressant use and later development of dementia. Its findings are based on medical records of a large sample (N=71,515) of non-demented adults aged 60 years old or older insured by a large, non-profit HMO in Israel. Individuals who had received prescriptions for one antidepressant (N=3,688) had more than 3 times higher chance to develop dementia during a 4-year follow-up period than those who had not.
