How Did We Ever Do Without Them?

Now a central component of most departments of pediatrics, the emergence of the unique role of the “hospitalist” dates back less than 40 years. It is difficult to imagine a hospital without hospitalists now given their central role in patient care throughout the nation. Likewise, it is difficult to imagine a department of pediatrics without hospitalists, given their roles in teaching.
