ST-elevation myocardial infarction in a real world population - An observational retrospective study with a sex perspective. Eur J Intern Med. 2019 Jun 11;: Authors: Kanic V, Suran D, Krajnc I, Kompara G Abstract BACKGROUND: Mortality after myocardial infarction is higher in women than in men. Data on the association between sex and mortality are conflicting and inconclusive. We evaluated whether there is a sex difference in survival and if sex is associated with the outcome in patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). METHODS: We analyzed 3671 STEMI patients. Long-term and 30-day mortality in men and women were compared. RESULTS: Unadjusted mortality at day 30 was higher in women [221 (8.7%) men died compared to 147 (13.1%) women; p

Hi everyone, As we know Heart Failure and Transplant fellowship is going for match this year. I just submitted my application, lets use this thread to connect people who are applying to it. Please share our interview invites and also I saw that some of the big programs like Mayo clinic, Univ of Michigan are not taking part in the ERAS. Does anyone know if they took already decided there candidate or do we need to apply to them separately? Does any one know any other programs who have... In this study, therefore, the underlying mechanism of methylglyoxal on osteoporosis was studied using both animal and cell models. In the animal model, rats were treated with either methylglyoxal or saline as control. In the cell model, the macrophage RAW264.7 was treated with methylglyoxal or vehicle control. Following the treatment, animal samples were harvested for micro-CT and real-time polymerase chain reaction analyses. Cell samples were harvested for MTT assay, RT-PCR, and Western Blotting analyses. In both animals and cell cultures, methylglyoxal was shown to induce osteoclastogenesis by increased gene expression o...

The objective of this work was to investigate the effect of boletus polysaccharide (BPS) on diabetic hepatopathy in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) rats for the first time. The rats were fed with high-fat diet (HFD) for 4 weeks and induced with STZ by a single intraperitoneal injection to develop T2DM model. The HFD was given continually for another 4 weeks after diabetes induction, following the drugs of BPS (400 mg/kg bw/day) infused to stomach of rats once a day. After the administration, blood was drawn from the posterior orbital venous plexus of the inner canthus and the rats were then...

This study investigated if statins would similarly reduce postoperative arrhythmias in patients undergoing THA. METHODS:: We queried a large Medicare and private-payer database from 2005 to 2012 and identified 12,075 patients who were on a statin prior to THA. We then age and sex matched 34,446 non-statin users who underwent THA. Baseline comorbidities and postoperative complications were obtained and assessed via standard descriptive statistics. RESULTS:: The statin users had more preoperative comorbidities including congestive heart failure, valvular heart disease, pulmonary and renal disease, diabetes, hyperte...

Authors: Robson A, Sturman J, Williamson P, Conboy P, Penney S, Wood H Abstract This is the official guideline endorsed by the specialty associations involved in the care of head and neck cancer patients in the UK. This paper provides recommendations on the pre-treatment clinical assessment of patients presenting with head and neck cancer. Recommendations • Comorbidity data should be collected as it is important in the analysis of survival, quality of life and functional outcomes after treatment as well as for comparing results of different treatment regimens and different centres. (R) • Patients with hyp...
