Adult hippocampal neurogenesis for systems consolidation of memory.
Adult hippocampal neurogenesis for systems consolidation of memory. Behav Brain Res. 2019 Jun 12;:112035 Authors: Terranova JI, Ogawa SK, Kitamura T Abstract The hippocampus (HPC) is required for the initial process of permanent memory formation. After memory acquisition, HPC-dependency of memory recall gradually decreases with time, whereas cortical-dependency of memory recall increases. This phenomenon is often referred to as systems consolidation of memory. In the HPC, adult neurogenesis has been described in many mammalian species and is involved in the process of learning and memory. In this review, we first examine the neural circuit mechanisms that underlie the systems consolidation of episodic memories, focusing on adult neurogenesis within the HPC. Recently, several studies have examined the characterization of memory engram cells, their biochemical and physiological changes, and the circuits for systems consolidation of memory. Therefore, we discuss the possible role of adult neurogenesis on functional states of memory engram cells, and speculate the implications of this transition of memory type for psychiatric disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder. In conclusion, our findings indicate that experimental SAE can occur in the absence of BBB breakdown and is accompanied by increased water diffusion anisotropy and altered glia cell morphology in brain white matter.Graphical abstract
ConclusionsOur findings suggest that trauma-exposed individuals exhibit information processing alterations in response to neutral environmental stimuli that may be related to a general pattern of heightened activity of the Salience Network. Implications for the neurobiological model of PTSD and PTSD psychotherapy are discussed.
The effects of parental trauma on offspring of Holocaust survivors (OHS) are debated in the literature. Recently, scholars suggested that it may be more productive to ask when and via which mechanisms such effects are observed. Following, the current study examines if parental Holocaust-related posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms are linked with the aging processes of their middle-aged offspring. Beyond this association, we also suggested a putative mediation path, indicating three underlying mechanisms by which parental trauma lingers on: perceived parent–child role reversal, secondary traumatization, and ...
Conclusions: Among male refugees living in precarious conditions in a Greek refugee camp, frequency of participation in an 8-week exercise and sport training program seemed to have the potential to positively impact refugees’ health. Due to the pre-experimental study design, our results must be interpreted with caution.
Conclusions: This case demonstrates the effectiveness of lifestyle interventions and psychospiritual support to enable dramatic clinical change without withdrawal syndrome after cessation of medication. More important, the initial failed tapering underpins the notion that a diligent meditation practice may be necessary to heal root-cause drivers of psychiatric symptoms and withdrawal syndrome. The results may serve to inform practitioners assisting patients who wish to discontinue benzodiazepine and other psychotropic medications or patients who would like to try a nonpharmaceutical approach as a first-line therapy. Did the movie Joker portray mental illness correctly and does it matter? We passionately go over the movie Joker from the lense of people living with mental illness and discuss whether or not there are implications of making a movie like this. Does it help us or hurt us? What if it does both? Listen in to hear Gabe’s freakishly good recollection of scenes from the movie as Jackie struggles to separate entertainment from reality. Spoiler Alert: You don’t need to see Joker to appreciate this conversation but we do go over the plot and reveal some important scenes from the movie. (Transcript Available Below)...

CONCLUSIONS: These preliminary findings suggest that oxytocin does not affect cue-induced craving. Our results contribute to an ever-growing field of research investigating the effects of intranasal oxytocin on the symptoms of substance use disorders and will help further refine methodology and streamline future inquiries in this area.
