Antiparasitic and Antifungal Medications for Targeting Cancer Cells Literature Review and Case Studies.

Conclusions: Due to the complexity of the behavior and biology of cells, scientists' primary focus should be on detection and elimination of sources of inflammation. Antiparasitic medications, and also antiviral, antibiotic, and antifungal medications should be thought of as underrecognized, underappreciated, and forgotten medications that can be part of cancer therapy. The information offered in this review suggests scientists should think of cancer not only as a metabolic disease but also as a metabolic parasite and should consider using antiparasitic medications under a new understanding of the role of inflammation, infection, and mitochondrial dysfunction in the development of cancer cells. In this study, the effects of dietary administration of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) (Enterococcus faecalis Y17 and Pediococcus pentosaceus G11) on growth performance and immune responses of mud crab were assessed. Both strains (Y17 and G11) showed an inhibitory activity against bacterial pathogens (Aeromonas hydrophila, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Vibrio alginolyticus, Staphylococcus aureus, and β Streptococcus), and a wide pH tolerance range of 2–10. In vivo, mud crabs were fed a control diet and experimental diets supplemented with 109 cfu g−1 diet either Y17 or G11 for 6 weeks before subjecting to a cha...

Publication date: December 2019Source: Protein Expression and Purification, Volume 164Author(s): Elisabeth Graeber, Volodymyr M. KorkhovAbstractThe translocator protein TSPO is in an important diagnostic and therapeutic target in a range of pathologies, including neuroinflammation and cancer. Despite the availability of several structures of TSPO homologues, our understanding of the molecular determinants that govern high-affinity interactions of TSPO with its ligands is incomplete. Here, in order to decipher the key structural elements of TSPO responsible for interactions with its ligands, we designed a panel of chimeric ...

young female, known to have a metastatic breast cancer, since 5 years. In 2017, she developed secondary lesions in the brain with positive CSF. She receives 30Gy/10 fr whole brain radiation, with intra-thecal chemotherapy. A month ago, she developed gait disturbances with blurred speech an hemifacial paresia. Brain MRI showed a solitary secondary lesion, 1.5 cm involving the left middle cerebral peduncle with extensive edema. No signs of meningeal disease. Pet CT : NED outside the brain... ConclusionsThe REAPSER study includes a cohort of patients with recent-onset PsA, before the disease course was modified by disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs prescribed in rheumatology departments. Exhaustive information collected in each visit is expected to be an important data source for future analysis.ResumenObjetivosDescribir la metodología del Registro Español de Artritis Psoriásica de reciente comienzo de la Sociedad Española de Reumatología (REAPSER), así como sus fortalezas y limitaciones. ConclusionDifferences were noted between parasite species found in Mediterranean Europe and northern Europe, where a range of zoonotic parasites were endemic alongside sanitation-related parasites. We suggest that the scarcity of zoonotic parasites in southern Europe in the medieval period may reflect contrasts in climate between northern and southern Europe.SignificanceThe repeated identification of roundworm eggs suggests that al-Andalus was less hygienic than historically depicted. We did not note a difference between parasites found in Muslim and Christian regions of Iberia, and the predominance of parasites spread by ...

Ascierto, Carlo Bifulco, Giuseppe Palmieri, Solange Peters, Nikoletta SidiropoulosAn enduring goal of personalized medicine in cancer is the ability to identify patients who are likely to respond to specific therapies. Our increasing understanding of the biology and molecular signatures of individual tumor types has facilitated the identification of predictive biomarkers and has led to an increasing number of diagnostic tests to be performed, often as serial and distinct assays on limited tumor specimens. The biom...

CONCLUSION: The management of HCC in clinical practice frequently deviates from the BCLC recommendations. Most of the curative therapy options, which have well-defined selection criteria, were allocated according to the recommendations, while the majority of the palliative therapy options were assigned to patients with tumor stages not aligned with the recommendations. The only parameter which is subjective in the algorithm, the performance status, is also the least respected. PMID: 31320173 [PubMed]
