E-cigarettes may be more harmful to a smoker’s heart than traditional tobacco cigarettes. That’s the finding of new research from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, presented today (Nov. 11) at an American Heart Association scientific conference. The Cedars-Sinai team compared the hearts of 10 non-smokers to the hearts of 10 tobacco smokers and 10 e-cigarette smokers. All the people in the study were younger than 40, and all were otherwise healthy. In response to a mild bout of exercise, measures of blood flow increased in the hearts of the non-smokers. Among the tobacco smokers, this increase was blun...

ConclusionEthyl acetate &Water extracts have represented potent activity against Salmonella typhi, Escherichia coli, &Staphylococcus aureus bacteria as well, provided cytotoxicity against tested cancer cell lines. These results can be explored to identify individual phyto-molecules from the extracts for anticancer &antimicrobial potentials to identify new phytomedicines.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is leaving the Libby Asbestos Superfund site, but that doesn’t mean the job is finished. It’s just changing hands. The Montana Department of Environmental Quality will assume the oversight role of the Superfund site, which was part of the longest-running, man-made environmental disaster in American history. The EPA spent almost two decades decontaminating Libby and nearby Troy, Montana, a massive project stemming from the vermiculite mine operation that once spread asbestos dust throughout the region, sickening both miners and residents throughout Lincoln County. More th...

Abstract The combined immunotherapy of nivolumab and ipilimumab causes a variety of autoimmune-related adverse events (irAEs). The current report details a 70-year-old woman with clear cell renal cell carcinoma metastasis in the lung. Two weeks after two courses of treatment, the patient complained of headache, dizziness and nausea. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis revealed an elevated protein level of 195 mg/dl and a significantly elevated white blood cell (WBC) count of 830/mm3 (lymphocytes, 825/mm3; neutrophils, 5/mm3). The results excluded malignancy and infection. The patient was diagnosed with aseptic meni...

In this study, we characterized the effect of kava and its components, 3 fractions and 6 major kavalactones, on NE-induced intracellular calcium influx in H1299, a human non-small cell lung carcinoma cell line. Results show that kava extract effectively inhibits NE-mediated intracellular calcium influx in H1299 cells, potentially through antagonizing β-AR signaling. This inhibitory activity is recapitulated by the major kavalactones in kava. Among the 6 major kavalactones, DHK demonstrated the best potency. Taken together, our study suggests a novel mechanism through which kava and its ingredients potentially offer th...
