Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease with significant morbidity and mortality and it is a growing worldwide health problem with a substantial physical, social and economic burden [1]. According to the International Diabetes Foundation, an estimated number of 425 million adults currently live with the condition, of whom 90% have type 2 diabetes [2].
