In order to solve the problem of short reaction time and the relationship between strength and porosity, diatomite was added into this system. Diatomite/magnesium phosphate porous composite material (DM-MPPCM) was prepared by the pre-foaming method. The results revealed that the addition of DM prolonged the setting time and improved the strength. The effects of different vesicant/water (V/W) ratios, diatomite/phosphate (DM/P) ratios and water/solid (W/SO) ratios on the mechanical properties and porosity of DM-MPPCM were investigated. The DM-MPPCM with an average pore size of about 75 μm showed porosity of 90.70%, compressive strength of 1.104 MPa and suitable bulk density of 620 Kg/m3 under the V/W ratio of 0.1, DM/P ratio of 1.5 and W/SO ratio of 0.6. Moreover, the observations and characterization results showed that addition of DM promoted the hydrogenation reaction, and DM as a filler was uniformly dispersed in the frame structure to improve the strength and porosity of DM-MPPCM.
