Screening flexible sigmoidoscopy versus colonoscopy for reduction of colorectal cancer mortality
ConclusionsScreening colonoscopy was associated with greater reductions in CRC mortality than screening sigmoidoscopy, and with a greater reduction in the distal than the proximal colon. These results provide additional information on the relative benefits of screening for CRC with sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy.
A new study finds colon cancer rates are rising among Americans under 50. Colon cancer has one of the highest mortality rates and is one of the most common forms of cancer. Dr. Jon LaPook joins the "CBS Evening News" to explain the trend.

The percentage of people under age 50 who have been diagnosed with colon cancer has rose to 12.2 percent in 2015, up from 10 percent in 2004, according to new research.
ConclusionEarly tumor shrinkage and DpR might be predictive markers only in left-sided CRCs with liver metastasis. Each imaging analysis has a different value based on the primary and metastatic sites.
CONCLUSIONS Emergency endoscopic placement of an intestinal stent is safe and effective in the treatment of patients with acute intestinal obstruction caused by colorectal cancer. It is also a safe and simple procedure for patients receiving advanced palliative treatment, which greatly improves their quality of life and is easy for patients' families to accept. Conclusions: The CCAT2/miR-200b/vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) axis plays important regulating effect in OSA through the PI3K/Akt and AMPK pathways. PMID: 31322006 [PubMed - in process]
Abstract Predictive biomarkers are revolutionizing decisions about colon cancer treatment. Knowing which biomarkers are altered provides valuable information about which treatment may be more effective. DNA mismatch repair and microsatellite instability testing may also identify families that could benefit from further genetic evaluation to determine if there is hereditary risk for colon cancer. Nurses need to be able to explain what these biomarkers mean and how they affect treatment decisions, as well as recommend genetic counseling and testing for hereditary risk when appropriate. ConclusionsShort-term mortality rates were high in octogenarians operated for colorectal cancer. Short-term mortality rates differ across four North European countries, but decreased over time for both colon and rectal cancer patients in all countries.
Authors: Strand LA, Martinsen JI, Borud EK Abstract INTRODUCTION: In 2012, Norwegian news media reported on cases of brain cancer among Norwegian peacekeeping troops who served in Kosovo, allegedly caused by exposure to depleted uranium fired during airstrikes before the peacekeepers arrived in 1999. A first study followed 6076 military men and women with peacekeeping service in Kosovo during 1999-2011 for cancers and deaths throughout 2011. The study did not support to the idea that peacekeeping service in Kosovo could lead to increased risk of brain cancer or other cancers. However, the average time of follow-up ...
A germline MBD4 mutation was identified in a patient with colorectal oligopolyposis and early‑onset cancer: A case report. Oncol Rep. 2019 Jul 17;: Authors: Tanakaya K, Kumamoto K, Tada Y, Eguchi H, Ishibashi K, Idani H, Tachikawa T, Akagi K, Okazaki Y, Ishida H Abstract A 42‑year‑old woman presented with ~30 adenomatous polyps of the left sided‑colon with early rectosigmoid cancer. The patient had no previous medical history and no familial history of inherited colorectal disease. No germline gene mutations associated with colorectal adenomatous polyposis, including APC regulator of WNT s...
