Self-reported Physical Health of Women Who Did and Did Not Terminate Pregnancy After Seeking Abortion Services: A Cohort Study.

Conclusion: Although some argue that abortion is detrimental to women's health, these study data indicate that physical health is no worse in women who sought and underwent abortion than in women who were denied abortion. Indeed, differences emerged suggesting worse health among those who gave birth. Primary Funding Source: An anonymous foundation. PMID: 31181576 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Authors: Pereira PG, Rabelo K, da Silva JFR, Ciambarella BT, Argento JGC, Nascimento ALR, Vieira AB, de Carvalho JJ Abstract Hypertension is characterized by persistent elevated blood pressure levels, one of the leading causes of death in the world. Renovascular hypertension represents the most common cause of secondary hypertension, and its progress is associated with overactivation of the renin angiotensin aldosterone system (RAAS), causing systemic and local changes. Aliskiren is a renin-inhibiting drug that optimizes RAAS suppression. In this sense, the objective of the present study was to analyze the morphoph...

In this study, we evaluated the effects of melatonin (Mel), leptin (Lep) or melatonin and leptin treatment on ovaries in control and obese rats. The animals were divided into control (NC), melatonin (NM), leptin (NL), melatonin-leptin (NML), obese (OC), obese-melatonin (OM), obese-leptin (OL), obese-melatonin-leptin (OML) groups. Body weights, peri-ovarian fat pads, volumetric parameters and numerical values of follicles were estimated. Also, the LH receptor (LHr) immune-positivity, catalase (CAT) and the myeloperoxidase (MPO) levels were determined. The body weight and peri-ovarian fat pads were significantly decreased fo...

AbstractThe potential role of the gut microbiota in various human diseases has attracted considerable attention worldwide. Here, we discuss the vital role of the intestinal microbiota in the development of obesity. First, we describe how the gut microbiota promotes fat accumulation. Additionally, a high-fat diet leads to structural instability among in the gut microbiota, further leading to an increase in endotoxins, which aggravates obesity. We then discuss how gut microbiota metabolites, including short-chain fatty acids and lipopolysaccharides, affect the host. Finally, we review several strategies for regulating the intestinal flora.

Authors: Iqbal Z, Dhage S, Mohamad JB, Abdel-Razik A, Donn R, Malik R, Ho JH, Liu Y, Adam S, Isa B, Stefanutti C, Soran H Abstract Introduction: Proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) inhibitors are novel drugs that have been developed since the discovery of the PCSK9 protein in 2003. In addition to background statin treatment they reduce low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) to unprecedented levels and have shown encouraging results in improving cardiovascular events. Concerns regarding the safety of PCSK9 inhibitors and very low LDL-C have somewhat been allayed after several longer-term prosp...

The two pain medicine threads on the front page got me thinking about our opioid prescribing patterns. Do any of you have specific medication preferences when prescribing outpatient opioids? If so, do you have a particular reason for choosing that drug? Of course, this is all assuming a low-dose, short-term course for appropriate diagnoses in conjunction with non-opioid analgesics.

ConclusionsThese findings confirm a relationship between alexithymia and essential arterial hypertension, but they also highlight that alexithymia appears to be associated with higher severity of hypertension. Alexithymia could be a facet of uncontrolled hypertension.
