Publication date: June 2019Source: Chinese Journal of Analytical Chemistry, Volume 47, Issue 6Author(s): Yu-Yao WEI, Zi-Qiao SUN, Hao-Hui REN, Lei LIAbstractMicrodroplets have been widely used in biology, chemistry, material science and engineering, and the microdroplet generation methods are becoming more efficient and controllable. The development of the generation of microdroplets experienced tradition methods, microfluidic chip-based methods, and off-chip methods proposed recently. In this review, we first briefly summarized the typical traditional methods and the microfluidic chip-based methods for microdroplet generation, and then emphatically introduced the principles, devices, and applications of the recently developed microdroplet generation methods. The advantages and disadvantages of these methods were discussed and the future development of microdroplet generation technology was also prospected.Graphical AbstractMicrodroplet generation methods have mainly experienced traditional methods, microfluidic chip-based methods, and off-chip methods proposed recently, which constitute the process from off-chip to on-chip then to off-chip. New methods are developed continuously while existing methods are improved. Microdroplets can be generated from various materials by using appropriate methods, which can be applied to research of different fields and make great contribution.
