A 14-year-old girl with a history of keratitis-ichthyosis-deafness (KID) syndrome, a rare autosomal dominant condition, was referred to the Department of Plastic Surgery at Brussels University Hospital in June 2016 for progressively worsening inguinoperineal ulceration exacerbated by overapplication of combination drug treclinax (tretinoin and erythromycin). On assessment, a large area of purulent papillomatous hyperkeratosis with follicular plugging, likely superimposed bacterial colonization, and deep ulceration were noted requiring thorough debridement. A first procedure was performed in June 2016 with hydrosurgical de...

Previous research has identified ventral and dorsal white matter tracts as being crucial for language processing; their maturation correlates with increased language processing capacity. Unknown is whether the growth or maintenance of these language-relevant pathways is shaped by language experience in early life. To investigate the effects of early language deprivation and the sensory-motor modality of language on white matter tracts, we examined the white matter connectivity of language-relevant pathways in congenitally deaf people with or without early access to language. We acquired diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) data ...

ConclusionThe etiology and duration of deafness are important factors for the estimated outcome in speech perception in SSD patients. Presented data reveal that an inflammatory disease leading to deafness in combination with a long duration of deafness (10  + years) lead to poorer speech perception outcomes.

Our study aimed to investigate GJB2 (connexin 26) and GJB2 (connexin 30) mutations associated with non-syndromic childhood hearing impairment (HI) as well as the environmental causes of HI in Ghana. Medical reports of 1,104 students attending schools for the deaf were analyzed. Families segregating HI, as well as isolated cases of HI of putative genetic origin were recruited. DNA was extracted from peripheral blood followed by Sanger sequencing of the entire coding region of GJB2. Multiplex PCR and Sanger sequencing were used to analyze the prevalence of GJB2-D3S1830 deletion. Ninety-seven families segregating HI were iden...

CONCLUSION: All three study groups-NH subjects, SSD CI recipients, and BilCI recipients-were able to recognize dichotically presented speech with both ears. For SSD CI recipients, there was no negative effect of the CI on speech recognition with the NH ear for dichotic presentation. PMID: 31520093 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

ConclusionThere is irrefutable evidence to suggest that the effect of AHL in later life exceeds the effect on hearing alone and extends to emotional and physical well-being as well as overall quality of life. The pilot study demonstrates the urgent need for a far-reaching study to evaluate the effect of AHL in later life on the Irish population, its impact on quality of life and cognitive decline while highlighting the need for community awareness and understanding.

Conclusions The present work demonstrates that the LEESPQ accurately captures early spoken language development in a typically developing group of young children. The LEESPQ holds promise as a clinically feasible, spoken language outcome monitoring tool. Future work to identify differences in performance characteristics between typically developing children and clinical populations is warranted. PMID: 31525125 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
